In this episode of Scalerailology, Dude RV hits the DFW Metroplex while RV camping and visiting family — and of course… we had to go Train-ing.
This one turns into a full-on adventure.
🚂 The Mission
Track down some of the last remaining pieces of the model railroading world:
Visit one of the few remaining model train stores in the U.S. Attempt to check out a club layout And finish strong with something truly next level… 🛑 The Reality
Not everything goes as planned.
We make the run at a club layout… and come up short.
But that’s part of Train-ing — sometimes the doors are closed, sometimes timing is off, but you keep moving.
🔥 The Payoff – Traintopia
Then we land at Frisco Discovery Center and step into Traintopia…
And WOW.
This is a massive Stevens G Scale layout that absolutely delivers:
🚂 Huge trains in motion 🌉 Detailed bridges and structures 🏔️ Expansive landscapes 🔁 Continuous, smooth operation 🎯 A scale build that feels alive
This isn’t just a layout… this is Scalerailology at its highest level.
🧠 Scalerailology Takeaway
From small shops to massive installations, this episode shows the full range of the hobby:
The struggle to find local train culture The value of supporting remaining train stores And the mind-blowing scale of what’s possible 🧭 Join the Adventure
This one started as a simple outing… and turned into a full Train-ing experience.
I Appreciate You Stopping By. You Got Here Just In Time. Y’all Come Back Now Ya Hear.
Welcome to Dude RV. Hey I appreciate you stopping by and of course say it with me you got here
just in time. That's right just in time for another training video.
No no no no no not that kind of training video. We are actually doing model railroads and we're
going to see some big trains too. Mom-in-law has flown into town. You can hear I'm over by Love
Field but we have loaded up Trudy Thunder and rolled through the Greater Dallas Metroplex.
Never really fun in the motorhome but we are staying at a RV resort. We know it's a resort
because they got a pond. They actually have a swimming pool. But anyway we're staying there
so that Yappy can hang out with her mother and rather than just sitting around twiddling my
thumbs I brought my toys, my cameras, my scooters and stuff. I was gonna do some kayak video today
but the wind is blowing hard so by golly we're going training. And we're gonna start at the
Discount Model Train Store. It's one of the few remaining train stores in North America.
They have the most popular four sizes available. They don't have an online presence so if you want
to see what they have you got to come here and show up. However they can work with you over the
phone and they do ship. So if you have a specific need that they can track down they can ship it to
you. So let's go take a look. They actually have kind of a layout here too and they've given me
clue on another club not too far away. They asked that I be discreet and not show anybody's face so
these are all on consignment.
Publications. I wonder if they have a motor home. I need to find the end scale of Trudy.
Those are really cool. Traffic signs. That's cool.
It is especially since I'm Dude RV.
Check that out. That's cool. This is my preferred
route of the Beaver. So as has happened before on my scale railology adventures
the guys over at the train store said I really need to come check out the
club layout here. Let's go see what we can find. There are no trains but it is interesting. Now
there's music so I gotta cut the audio and replace it with something else but
we'll do a quick walk through in case you're into vintage toys. Here we go.
So if you collect toys this is probably a place you want to visit.
We found the model train but we don't get to see the model train. We'll have to come back.
All right we have made it to the destination. This is the Frisco Discovery Center Train-Topia
and we are going to get an overview. We're actually not going to do the real trains outside.
We've seen a lot of those on this playlist but we have not seen this and we have got a wonderful
guide. Please introduce yourself to the world. My name is Sam. I'm one of the volunteers here at
the Museum of the American Railroad. This is the Train-Topia exhibit donated by the
Sanders family made possible with a very generous donation by Brent and Amanda Ryan
and the city of Frisco will bring a place for housing. All right he's got just a lot of info
here so let's let's get into it. So this layout was owned by Steve Sanders. I don't know how
things were when he was growing up. This is Elm Street. Steve was in the Boy Scouts and he would
ride the train from Union Station to various scout camps. One of them was in Colorado outside
Colorado Springs. Now Steve designed this layout and he didn't build it. He said I want Colorado.
We have a state park there. We do. Caledonia Canyon is the second largest canyon in the
United States after the Grand Canyon. This is a picture of White House Rock and a model of it
on the track that shows the computer where the train is and it talks to it. The computer
controls all the on-off stuff through those since the project was completed. Now that we've got the
rundown from Sam I'm going to go in and zoom in on some of these. I think it's really fascinating
that they actually have the lighting synchronized so that it the display shows daylight evening.
It's very interesting. It says Steve Stop.
The O scale over there. It's running underneath. We may want to get this one. This layout was owned
by the Newhoff family. Okay. But uh and it's actually was a larger layout than the Sanders
layout but we got it after we got here. They look so much alike because Rob Reed actually
built the Newhoff layout as well. Those are the only two train layouts he ever built.
Okay. We're about five miles apart in Dallas and neither man knew the other and Rob didn't bother
him until he had built the other layout. So we're still in the process of resurrecting that because
the question was where do you put a third of the train layout because that's all the room we have.
So now we're trying to incorporate O gauge and G gauge. They can't interconnect
but we've got lines running underneath that will run underneath the layout so we eventually hope to
have them. Cool.
It's called a whisper dish right here. So I'm gonna I'm gonna put y'all right here.
I'm gonna go to that one. This is pretty cool. That's pretty funny. We're headed over here.
There's the largest one of the largest diesel electrics ever built right next to the bad boy.
That'd be a pretty cool place to live right there so you can see the museum.
We will have to return someday and do that. I think this is one of the best
as far as the train displays that we've seen the modern full-size trains. This has got to be
one of the best and I'm sure it's a guided tour because it's still under construction I presume.
The meteor. Good morning. Good morning from Frisco, Texas or I guess we're technically
Hackberry Creek maybe. We're on Lake Louisville at a private campground on an old Corps of
Engineers called Hidden Cove and it is like right down the road from the Frisco Discovery Center. So
if you have an RV and you want to come up and see the this massive train layout this is a good place
to stay. Definitely worth the visit to see if you're in a model train. Definitely worth the
visit. On this video I just I wanted to kind of give you from the start the beginning we went to
the train store and we looked at all the various different pieces and parts and we and then we went
and saw an actually completed professionally built actually two I didn't get off there's not
a whole lot on that sea gauge line just yet to shoot video of as far as just the aesthetics. So
if you like doing them all if you're if you're into scale railology then the Frisco Discovery
Center is definitely a an addition to your list. You got to add that to your list because that guy
built that that was a heck of a display. That was entertaining. It was fun to look at all the
little scenes that he had created and and how accurate they were represented. Very fascinating.
Great experience. People were fantastic too. So get over to Frisco, Texas and see the model trains
and the big trains. We'll be coming back. All right I hope y'all enjoyed this production.
