Welcome to N-Scale Dystopia, a channel dedicated to documenting the build of my post-apocalyptic
N-Scale Railroad. The year is 2043 and an unknown cataclysmic event has reset society
and drastically reduced the population. The survivors among us gather in small cells
deep within crumbling cities, salvaging what they can to survive and traveling via abandoned rail
The N-Scale Dystopia's design is based on the Carbondale Central, a project railroad designed
by Malcolm Furlow in the late 1980s. The Carbondale Central was described as an HO layout that hoped
to disguise itself as something more than a beginner's project. The plan was a simple figure
eight with five industrial sidings. I've always liked this design as it had two scenery levels
that allowed the builder to separate railroad from city. I'm also taking inspiration from
Hashima Island. Hashima was a coal mining island of Nagasaki built during the industrialization of
Japan. The mine was closed in 1974 and the island was abandoned. For over 14 years nature has been
reclaiming the small city and it's everything you can imagine the apocalypse would look like.
I duplicated the Carbondale track plan in the Atlas track planning software tool
using Atlas code 55 turnouts and track. The plan was imported into Adobe Illustrator and printed
full size on eight and a half by eleven paper. The baseboard is laminated styrofoam mounted on a two
by two wooden frame. Printouts were glued directly to the styrofoam and the basic contours and
waterways were shaped using a hot wire cutter. The foam road bed was glued directly to the
printouts using liquid nails and the track was installed using latex caulking and pushpins.
Moving forward I will do my best to document the unscaled dystopia
uploading videos that you will find interesting if not entertaining.
I appreciate you watching let me know what you think in the comments.
