Long, long ago, in the ancient Kingdom of Shu, there was a ruler named Du Yu. He was kind and benevolent, and deeply loved by his people. During his reign, he placed great importance on agriculture. He taught the people how to farm and promoted irrigation projects, making the land of Shu increasingly prosperous. The people lived stable and happy lives. For this reason, he was respectfully called the Wang Emperor (Wang Di).
As time passed, Du Yu grew older. He felt that he no longer had the strength to rule, so he decided to abdicate the throne to a capable and virtuous minister—the prime minister Bie Ling (also known as Kaiming).
After stepping down, Du Yu withdrew into the mountains to live in seclusion and devote himself to spiritual cultivation. He had believed that under Bie Ling’s rule, Shu would continue to flourish. However, before long, the land fell into chaos due to internal strife and disasters. The people’s lives became extremely difficult.
Unable to return to the throne and save his kingdom, Du Yu was filled with deep sorrow. Day and night, he cried out in grief, calling again and again:
“Better to return… better to return…”
It is said that his profound sorrow moved Heaven and Earth. In the end, Du Yu’s soul transformed into a cuckoo bird, also known as the Zigui bird. It flew among the mountains every day, crying endlessly, as if telling of its longing for its homeland and its concern for the people.
Legend says that when the cuckoo calls, blood flows from its mouth. The drops of blood fall upon the mountains and forests. Miraculously, the blood stains the earth red, and from the soil bloom clusters of brilliant red flowers.
People came to call these flowers “azaleas,” in memory of Emperor Du Yu—Wang Di—and his enduring devotion and loyalty to his people.
