I Tried To Make Cheap Furniture Look Expensive & Unique

I decided to do a little experiment with these common, readily available big box store night tables. You can usually pick these up on FB marketplace for a pretty good price, and they look FABULOUS painted with some new hardware but I wanted to try something a bit different here.

My initial plan was to do a white wash, but as you watch the video, you'll see why I wasn't sure about that anymore. After many hours of stripping and sanding the terrible old finish away, I opted to try and create a barn wood / weathered look using Odie's Oil & Mr Cornwall's products. I created a custom stain using Up In Smoke and Chocolate Lab pigments, mixed into some Super Duper Everlasting Oil and Odie's Safer Solvent.

The wood on these mass produced pieces is usually not the greatest so these are perfect pieces to practice on and try out new products and techniques, without worrying about damaging a more valuable piece of furniture. Just because these are pricy to purchase new in store, doesn't mean they are top quality materials (more so that they are simply overpriced). Usually underneath that THICK multi layer finish, you find subpar wood, often with areas of glue staining and cracks filled with wood filler. They are, however, usually very sturdy and have many years of life left in them.

The rustic, western, barn style vibe still sells VERY well in my area, so I should be able to sell these fairly quickly.
