August 9 is National Book Lovers Day. Although no one knows when or how this holiday began, it’s a wonderful idea. The ability to read is not just a skill; it’s a privilege and one of the greatest pleasures. No other form of entertainment encourages imagination and escapism as much as reading a book, since it leaves the mind’s eye uncluttered by other people’s visions and forced images.

Classic literature has the ability to evoke times as well as places. Each season of the year has been immortalized and honored by magnificent poems and prose. The warm, calm season is no exception, as an article in the Life and Tradition section of the Epoch Times illustrates. From poems by Shakespeare and Emily Bronte to beautiful narrative passages from books by Mark Twain and John Muir, many different types of literature include beautiful tributes to summer. One of the examples is from L. M. Montgomery's "Anne's House of Dreams." This is one of the later books in the author's lengthy series which began with "Anne of Green Gables" in 1908. Tiffany Brannan describes how reading the first book inspired her to read and love all eight books in the Anne Shirley series and three books in the authoress's other series, "Emily of New Moon."
