This summer has been persistently hot, and heat sends us running to switch on the air conditioning. Despite how drying and annoying the persistent blowing can be, cranking the AC is the main solution for staying cool to which we turn. However, not every building has air conditioning. It can break down, and it’s very expensive to run. How did people keep cool before the invention of modern forced air-cooling systems?
A great way to make yourself more comfortable in the heat is by lowering your body temperature. That can be done internally through several common kitchen herbs. Tiffany Brannan talks about a few average ingredients which contain chemical properties that will cool you down. She discusses an article in The Epoch Times on the subject which includes a few recipes for refreshing summer treats. Besides internal refreshment, people used to stay cool by dressing in natural fabrics, which were breathable, unlike modern synthetic fabrics. #mentalhealth#mind#bodyhealth#health#healthcare#healthandwellness#bodyhealthy#wellbeing#wellness#show#talkshow#traditional#american#america#healthbenefits
Epoch Insights with Tiffany. My name is Tiffany Brannan. Late this spring a friend of mine who's
a world traveler said, I think you're going to have a hot summer. Referring to Southern California
where I live and I remember my mother and sister and I were like oh I hope so because at the time
it was kind of cloudy and cold in San Diego County where we live and like this isn't sunny
Southern California why is it so cold which was it seemed like it was never going to get warm.
In this spring it seems basically there wasn't a spring this year it was winter and then all
of a sudden it was summer and it still is it's just been intense and hot and it's it's one of
the hottest summers I remember and there are some times when you just can't have air conditioning
and it's useful to know other ways to keep cool both to save electricity and I find it can get a
little stressful to have air blowing on you constantly and then it's so easy to then to
be way too cold it's better to find a way to cool yourself if you can't be in a room that's a nice
comfortable temperature and there's an article in the home section of the Epoch Times called
beat the heat with kitchen herbs and it talks about a few natural foods and herbs that can
help you stay cool by triggering some cooling mechanisms in your body of course there's the
natural just have something cold to drink and that is always a great way to cool down to something
with ice in it but there are some other things that can refresh you in a different way some
plants are hot like it seems counterintuitive to have some chili peppers or something like that
when you're already hot but that can tell your body that you're in a hot environment and it can
make you start to perspire and that makes you cool down if for some reason you aren't already
perspiring in this situation and also there are plants that are called diaphoretics which
cool the body by tapping into the making you perspire so that you can cool yourself down
there also are herbs which can hydrate you because they have a higher water content like cucumbers
as well as plants that have antioxidants because they get all your body's systems working and
they make your immune system stronger and just give you some energy and vitality which is very
useful when it's hot and you can feel a run down there are a few different plants which are
specifically mentioned in this article one of them is hibiscus and as it describes cold hibiscus tea
is popular in cultures across the world it's a summertime favorite even at places like starbucks
you'll see hibiscus tea although a lot of hibiscus teas are full of sugar this article talks about
just plain old natural hibiscus tea and it's high in antioxidants and vitamin c and that's why it
has a pleasantly tart flavor and that bright red color is what shows really that it has those
antioxidants and it helps protect yourselves from the damage of free radicals as well as
supporting healthy skin and promote wound healing so a traditional hibiscus is well loved for its
um cultures around the world make tea with it during the hottest months
for instance in in mexico they have agua de jamaica or agua de jamaica to pronounce it
correctly which is sweetened with sugar and served over ice and it has a sour and a stringent quality
but it also has a fruity undertone so it's a nice pairing with berries or citrus fruit
and in this article there's a recipe for a hibiscus berry slushy and it includes water
dried hibiscus or hibiscus tea two cups of mixed frozen berries and a quarter cup of honey
so there's not even any sugar in that that's a very healthy it sounds very delicious
way to keep cool by drinking something like that with berries as well as
um hibiscus and just water and and the frozen quality of the berries and you can make it for
yourself much cheaper than you could buy a slushy or a smoothie at most restaurants or
or stores that cater to that the second thing mentioned is mint chewing on fresh mint cools
your mouth in the same way that eating jalapeno heats it up menthol is an organic compound which
is in mint and it has that fresh cooling effect and it also has antioxidants which help make your
body start its anti-inflammatory response and that's why antioxidants are good for keeping you
cool because they get you removing all that inflammation because heat and inflammation are
very closely related you can really start to feel inflamed and tired worn down when you get too hot
and it can make you feel light-headed faint and sick to your stomach but mint is good for many of
those things peppermint tea is an excellent cure for a stomach ache so it can be good if you have
some kind of nausea associated with heat sickness and it also can make you feel less light-headed
one recipe that i remember reading years ago was to brew some mint tea it could be peppermint or
some other kind of mint then cool it off in the refrigerator and put it with lemon juice so you've
got iced peppermint or mint tea with lemon juice and i remember making that one summer years ago
because it was really hot and then i was practicing my singing right afterwards and i realized that
it's one of the best drinks for classical singing i still like to drink that as i'm practicing or
preparing to perform in opera and i think that there are many scientific reasons for that because
as we just described mint has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory purposes and having inflammation
is in your larynx is not a good thing if you want to sing you need to keep everything free of
inflammation not only your larynx but even your stomach your other parts of your body any passages
it's not good to have any inflammation in your body when you're going to sing anytime really
but it's important to stay very relaxed and mint has those qualities plus lemon can cut phlegm
which is important when you're singing but it also is even more refreshing than if you just have it
by itself as well as giving it a better flavor it adds a brightness and a freshness as well as
more vitamin c and thus more antioxidants so it's an excellent way to cool yourself down and the
hispanic cooking but it's a delicious herb which has a note of citrus to it in a unique fresh
flavor it also is packed with antioxidants to support healthy cells and it has some phenolic
acids such as caffeic acid which neutralize the harmful free radicals with similar qualities to
mint and it reduces inflammation and supports heart health as well as having beta carotene and
vitamin c so you can use it for its essential oil purposes but the best ways to just sprinkle it on
a salad or mix it into a soup or a sauce and it makes it much healthier and zesty and cool during
the hot days there's a recipe in here for watermelon and feta salad with fresh mint
and it really covers all the different bases for ways to stay cool through recipes it has
six cups of cubed watermelon four ounces of diced feta one jalapeno sliced thin red onion
chopped fresh mint extra virgin olive oil a lime and sea salt so you have almost everything we
mentioned in there you have watermelon which is mentioned earlier on in the article it's full of
water and and liquid and juice so it's very refreshing in the hot days of summer as well
to have some heat to get all your systems working and mint and i i imagine you could put a little
cilantro in there too but i don't think the recipe mentions cilantro in that particular one but
it might be good and then the third recipe is cilantro mint limeade you don't usually think
of cilantro as something you would put in a drink but its fresh flavor could be very good i know
i've enjoyed having thyme lemonade so this just has lime juice which is very refreshing water
honey fresh cilantro and fresh mint it sounds very good it could be a nice drink to have alongside
your watermelon and feta salad and then have a hibiscus berry slushy for dessert
nowadays people quickly turn to wearing just the coolest clothes they can possibly find
shorts tank tops it's it's all about being cool and they look at clothes from people of
just a few generations past and say how did they survive wearing all those clothes because women
would be wearing long dresses if you're going as far back as the victorian era men wearing long
sleeve shirts vests oftentimes coats long trousers hats sometimes ties a man might skip the vest if
were very hot and he lived in a very tropical climate like florida but it was rare that he would
be seen in anything other than a suit up until about the 1940s at the earliest when it became
acceptable to wear to not wear a coat when you were not engaged in manual labor or some kind of
athletic activity even the term blue collar worker if you really think about it it's referring to the
fact that a businessman would wear a white button-down shirt long sleeve and a workman would
wear some other color but the same type of shirt nowadays say it's a t-shirt collar worker is what
most people are no matter what industry they're in but the thing that people don't take into
consideration there are really two things the first thing is your body can become acclimated
to wearing certain amounts of clothing just depending on how much you wear them
and if you get used to wearing a lot of clothing you can adjust the temperature of your body
the other thing which is more important that people don't consider is fabric clothing used
to be made out of natural substances like cotton or linen if it was hot flax of course they would
also use things like wool in the winter for warmth but silk as well these natural substances
are cooling because they would hang better and they're plants so it's breathable polyester is
just about the least breathable substance in the world yet it's what all clothes are now so people
are wearing polyester and they wonder why they're hot like well maybe if you were wearing a cotton
shirt you would be as hot or a linen suit might be cooler than a polyester top as well as the fact
that polyester is basically plastic so it's not really good for you to wear polyester i mean we
all do it very few people are committed to making their own clothes or just buying things that are
either vintage so they are before the day of polyester or there are some there are some
excellent online stores or places that are dedicated to making fine linen in an old style
or cotton but it's something to consider when thinking about temperature especially if it's
an occasion where you need to be dressed nicely maybe see if you can find some kind of a retro
linen suit if you're a gentleman or a cotton or linen dress or a silk dress maybe something that's
looser or freer flowing and with undergarments as well ladies a cotton slip or a silk slip
or something with satin material of course it's better if you can get silk satin rather than
polyester satin there are great forms of wisdom we can find if we look into the past and wonder
how people used to do things just in even our parents and grandparents generations
looking to the kitchen finding great recipes like this and beverages we can enjoy and to the closet
to see are we making smart choices to keep ourselves cool using hats to keep the sun off
our faces ladies can use a parasol it's amazing how much cooler that'll keep you using handheld
fans and just using some good old common sense to stay comfortable in the heat of the summer
