Western medicine looks at the physical symptoms of illness to determine whether a person is healthy. However, traditional medicine, Easter medicine, and alternative medicine recognize that true wellness is determined by much more than physical health. Wellness is only achieved when a person is in a state of homeostasis, general agreement of the whole system. It’s impossible to achieve a deep sense of calm and wholeness in mind, body, and spirit without exercise, nourishment, and rest.

Three articles in the Mind & Body section of The Epoch Times talk about this in specifics. One article talks about the chemical reasons why exercise reduces depression by boosting motivation. Another describes the value of rest for improving one’s health and overall quality of life. The third article explains how there are three states of the nervous system, controlled by the vagus nerve. When we skip meals, skimp on sleep, and neglect healthful practices like exercise, we risk getting stuck in a state of alarm. This will affect our mood as well as our physical processes, like the digestive system. It’s important to learn to return to the state of calm as often as possible.
