ExclusiveScottish runner Eric Lidell won at the Olympics after standing for his faith
In 1982, it was shocking when "Chariots of Fire" won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. No one expected this faith-inspired movie to beat secular nominees, but it proved the winner because of its inspiring message and true story. The son of missionaries, Eric Lidell was a Scottish runner who wouldn't compete in the 100-mile dash in the 1924 Olympics because the event was held on Sunday, a day he held sacred as a Christian. He instead competed in the 400-mile dash on another and ended up winning the gold medal. After his athletic achievements, he returned to China as a missionary.
Eric Lidell’s story is very inspiring, regardless of one’s personal religious beliefs. He was unafraid to stand for what he believed, no matter what others thought of him. It’s no wonder that his life inspired an award-winning film, which remains one of the most beloved movies about the Olympics ever made. Tiffany Brannan compares his story with an article in the Opinion section of The Epoch Times, “God Shouldn't Be Erased from Public Life.” In an increasingly secular world, faith must be respected in the public sphere.
