ExclusiveYoung people haven’t been taught to appreciate simple pleasures and hard work
Gen Z is statistically unhappy, leading to America's dropping from the Top 20 happiest countries in the world. Some reasons for this could be the absence of God, the deification of technology, the encouragement in school to dwell on the negative, and not knowing how to appreciate and enjoy simple things. The musical based on the “Peanuts” stories, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” includes a song called “Happiness,” in which the characters talk about the little things which bring them joy. While they may seem trivial, this ability to derive happiness from ordinary things is the secret to being contented.
Tiffany Brannan talks about an article in The Epoch Times which talks about simple, old-fashioned, often inexpensive ways to have fun. From going to the zoo to visiting an orchard, these ideas are inexpensive, old-fashioned ways for families to have fun. Another reason young people are unhappy is a lack of purpose, which can be attributed not only to meaningless relationships and hobbies but the lack of useful, traditional skills. An article in the Epoch Times’s Home section called “Don't Fear the Pressure Canner” describes how a homesteading mother of 11 learned to pressure can out of necessity. She now gets great satisfaction out of preserving healthy food for her family all year long and instructs other on how to do so, too. Clearly she, her husband, and her children have found the traditional approach to satisfaction out of hard work and simple pleasures.
