Hey everyone, Charlie here and for the next two days I'm camping and exploring in the
most beautiful place on the planet.
I'm using boats to explore giant fjords and stand under waterfalls.
I'm visiting alpine lakes and cooking delicious food with an amazing view.
Welcome to Milford Sound.
We're late for our boat.
We're in a bit of a hurry.
It rains over 200 days a year in here, which explains all the greenery.
And I'm losing my mind, losing my mind, I'm losing my mind, now, yeah.
You were the laughter that kept me alive, you were hello when I was goodbye, remember
the flicker that faded away, you were the summer, I was that same old you.
Listen to how loud those cicadas are, that's crazy.
Well we've just finished our cruise now across the Sound, now we're dropping our bags and
going for a bit of an explore.
Oh, just walked straight into a bog.
There's a whole bunch of hiking and tramping boots.
Tramping is just the word we use for hiking here in New Zealand.
Right behind me there in the background is the biggest waterfall in the whole fjord.
It's over 162 metres tall.
It's a little wecker.
It's my drink.
These look good.
It's a good thing it hasn't been raining.
In heavy rain this river would be fully flooded.
This is a temporary bridge.
It gets removed in winter because of avalanche risk.
Now I'm wishing that river had some water in it.
I am so thirsty.
This valley that we're walking in was once a giant glacier, and it's left behind this
big U-shaped valley.
It's like a big bowl.
Ah, yes.
My mum didn't forget about me, she's given me some more biscuits to eat.
These ones are oat and raisin, which is my absolute favourite.
Since this area is completely covered in snow in the wintertime, it's a pretty harsh environment
for all the plants.
So the only wildlife you see up here is stuff that can survive being buried under ice for
all of winter.
I have never been more happy to see a waterfall in my entire life.
Well, this is all that's left of my water, so I'm looking forward to filling up.
Oh, that is the best tasting water I've ever had.
Well, I've got the start of my tent set up, and I'm really looking forward to setting up
my sleep system.
I've got a whole new style to try today.
These pump sacks are super useful when you're setting up your sleeping mat.
Rather than having to use all of your breath to pump it up, you can just use this.
Well, not only do I have a really nice sleeping mat, I've also got a sheet to go with it.
It's an absolute luxury.
And there's a reason I'm using this.
There we go.
Well, normally with a sleeping bag, you have it zipped up nice and tight.
But this time I'm leaving mine open, like a big duvet.
And with the sheet below, it's just going to be like my bed at home.
On my shelter tonight.
Oh, that's quite sandy, isn't it?
Here's a new problem. I've got nowhere to stake out my tent.
Well, we've got our tent set up, but one thing we don't have is any water.
There's another high alpine lake just over there that we're going to head to to fill up our water bottles.
But there's one thing we have to keep in mind.
Here in the mountains of New Zealand, there are no land predators that can harm us.
But what we do have are these cheeky little parrots called keas.
They're the only alpine parrot in the world, and any of the gear that I leave out, they'll come and snatch.
They don't have any use for it, they just do it for the love of the game.
So all of my gear here needs to get inside my tent.
Oh my goodness, look across there.
There's some people slacklining across the canyon.
Well, the lake we're heading to is over there, but I really want to get a closer look at that.
That's just vertical down to the valley floor.
Hang on a minute.
The sun has heated this rock up so nicely.
Well, I've got an idea of what I want to make for dinner tonight, so I'm going to start with cooking some bread.
It's a bit of a lie actually, I'm just heating it up.
There we go. That's how I want it.
Crispy and buttery.
This is the best smelling steak ever, you're right.
That's so tender. Oh my goodness.
There we go.
I've got my steak sliders, it's time to see how they taste.
I'm going to make you one of these, Hayden. It'll blow your mind.
Or maybe it's just the view that's making it taste so good, but either way I'm happy.
We're getting Hayden's one started.
There you are, sir.
Seal of approval, that's all that matters.
Well, now that the sun's gone, it's getting really cold, so I'm going to get into my tent and get warm.
I am absolutely freezing right now, but there is no way I'm going to pass up seeing that sunset,
so I'm going to get into some warm clothes now.
I've also got myself an adhesive body warmer.
These things are absolute lifesavers.
They're cheap, they weigh like nothing, and they heat you up so good.
It'll last most of the night as well inside my puffer jacket and my sleeping bag.
That was nice, but it is too cold to be outside now.
I'm going to get into my bed.
Oh, this is very cozy.
Good night, Hayden. Good night, everybody.
Well, good morning, everybody.
That might be the best sleep I have had in a long time, camping or even at home.
It's so cozy I don't want to get out, but I have to because I need to make breakfast and get out of here,
so let's get up.
I think this might be the best way to heat the bagel up.
There's a bit of a rotisserie bagel going on here.
Well, how's that for breakfast?
I've got two bagels with some boysenberry jam and a handful of strawberries.
My bagel's warm, but my boysenberry jam's still cold.
All right, the moment I have been dreading.
Oh, this is soaking wet.
You can see all these patches don't get much sun, which is why there's so much snow there.
It is bitterly cold outside of that sun.
There's a big quartz vein going all the way down the waterfall,
and you can even see it going under the pool there.
All of these plants along this area are all flattened.
There was probably an avalanche in the winter that came through and just flattened them all.
It's been a while since we've seen some trees.
It's a very welcome sight to be out of the hot sun.
Unfortunately, it was short-lived.
That is beautiful water.
I don't remember there being this much water.
Well, that's the walk done.
