AI GeneratedStrix and Fran navigate the remote coastlines of Northern Australia aboard their catamaran. Their journey is a blend of survival, wildlife documentation, and historical exploration, as they hunt for food and search for ancient artifacts while remaining constantly vigilant against the dangers of saltwater crocodiles in a wild frontier.
G'day guys we're Strix and Fran
and it's now been over 100 days at sea on our quirky orange
catamaran. This week we fish,
we hunt and explore what feels like a completely forgotten coastline
but amongst the untouched beaches that stretch for miles
and freshwater waterfalls that run
straight into the ocean.
These islands hold a mystery which can rewrite the history books as
we know it. So we search the beaches for treasure
and pieces of the past while
living off what we catch
and cooking up our meals in a very special beach kitchen.
But this is crocodile country
and we need to remember they're never too far
away. Sometimes they're actually way too close,
hiding where you least expect them.
They come with us as we beach comb, fish,
hunt and live off the land in one of the
last truly wild corners of Australia
this is sailing across the top episode 10.
and as always a massive thank you
to our wonderful crew over on Patreon for helping make this
possible you ready to go check
the truck out i'm so excited
that could be anything dingoes
goannas kangaroos i don't think a kangaroo will go
for the frame actually maybe you never know
pigs. A carnivorous kangaroo. Or what else can it be?
Or maybe a Tasmanian tiger. You never know,
you never know. We're heading in to check our secret camera
and eventually try to catch
something for dinner.
Oh man what's that big swell over there to the right.
Oh yeah it must be look we've
a huge bow wave going up there.
Is it a crocodile or a shark?
Oh there's a shark. I'm not sure if that
was a crocodile or a shark to start
with but at the end it was definitely a shark
this is where we saw a very big crocodile yesterday
so i'm sure he's around here somewhere
a little bit to the right yeah detective fran
what does it look like has come in i can see
little kangaroo or wallaby track
here okay let's check the camera all right what can you see
so that's where we've set the camera
up yeah oh we could just see his ears
and he had a sniff right in the camera didn't he and then
hopped off oh there's some ice there yeah it's coming closer it's
a little wallaby isn't it
he's almost a little bit curious isn't he oh he's popping straight
in front of the camera that's
awesome so cute this is one
of those little rock wallabies i believe yeah oh that's great he's
hopping straight at the camera g'day mate oh
that's cool that's really cool we came to the
other end of the beach and there's a little murky
reddish color pond and we just spotted a big slide
it comes in here all the way from the ocean it's a really long slide
but yeah i might be in there he's got
to be in here somewhere right yeah pretty cool creek
really cool don't want to get too close to it
though no looks scary we found another tamarind
tree the macassans were here if you watched
that previous episode you'll know that macassans
fishermen used to sail all the way from Sulawesi,
Indonesia to Northern Australia in search of sea
cucumbers and along the way they interacted
and traded with Aboriginal people. We found evidence
of these encounters ourselves including pieces
of glass that were exchanged between them.
Wait, let's sneak up
in this one.
They disappeared so quick.
Hey, that's a big crocodile friend.
As soon as he noticed that we'd spotted him,
he just slipped below the surface and pushed
offshore.
So sneaky.
Very sneaky.
We'll have to keep an eye on him.
This is a croc slide, that's for sure,
and I think that's the one that is watching us
fishing now.
It looks a little bit smaller than
the one we saw in the previous episode.
Hey, mate.
Oh,
jack
is
on.
So much rubbish out of back here.
Wow, isn't he beautiful?
Look at the colors on this little tusky.
Wow.
A little bit too small for us, I reckon.
Absolutely beautiful fish.
I'm going to leave him in here to catch his breath.
Oh, off he goes.
Come out,
mate.
You almost got me into the reef.
are you the same fish i just caught
oh well done beautiful colors wow
what a beautiful fish we know
there is big mud crabs
and beautiful barramundis here like the ones we caught in the previous
episode
so we're
hopeful
to get
something
for dinner
a big
indonesian
ghost
net
so sad oh
we've got a crab a little one got a crab
but i reckon it might be a little bit too small friend
yeah should we let it go should we put it back
so it tracks more yeah it can stay in there and
call some friends
in alrighty going back
it's broken in three
parts did that come
a trail i did i don't
know if i filmed it he broke my rod cut my fingers
and then bloody cut off in three parts bloody hell
how did
that even happen what
a disaster oh
no that's a really
big one just go slow
because your hooks will straighten
so we found where they were hanging out
nice work friend this will test your knot
what do you reckon got it i think i see it oh i'm gonna have to drop it
that's way too big for it that's huge it
was huge yeah it's a big big food oh a bit of excitement
anyway yes we got one friend
this way mate we've hooked
a big one friend this guy might have your
lure in his mouth this is by far
the biggest fish i've hooked on this trip it's a big one
holy moly not sure exactly what it is i didn't get a good look at it
but maybe a big gt could
be anything could be a big queenie could even be a mackerel
but hopefully we get him up to get a
look at him just starting to see some color now
It's big, whatever it is, a very strong fish it's
It's a nice-sized trevally.
Bit of action for us anyway.
Oh, geez, he's strong for him, look at this.
Come on, mate, just relax.
Not sure who's gonna get tired first here,
but I just wanna get him up,
get this hook out for him,
because he's not the species we wanna eat.
He's a nice trevally, isn't he?
He's a nice one.
Hey-oh!
Beautiful fish.
Man, they don't need any swimming lessons, these guys.
They are strong swimmers.
They're not the species we want to be eating though.
I would say that's a GT,
but he's got like a yellow tinge to his fins.
We'll let this guy go to grow even bigger.
See
you,
mate.
Got a fish.
You got one?
Go get him over the reef.
Oh, he's flying in.
You did well to get him out of the reef.
Poor fish.
Was he going for the lure or he just got yoinked out?
Little stripe, he's too small for us.
Do you reckon he was going for it or he just got yoinked?
A dark tail snapper.
What a treat, a coral trout.
These are my favourite eating fish anyway.
Little beauty.
Incredible sunset, beautiful way to finish the day.
Yeah, I reckon up to those two islands.
It's now time to head off and explore a new bay.
A fair bit of wind this morning, it's going to be a quick sail.
So we're just coming offshore.
get the sails up and take off.
The sails filled.
We took off at about 10 knots.
We're doing about nine knots now.
This is a really nice sail
for us up here. We've just
dropped anchor in a new bay to explore.
From here, from the anchorage, you can see sort
of behind Fran there. There's all these sandstone cliffs.
So we'll definitely be checking them
out. You never know what you'll find in under the ledges there.
And then there's a beautiful
long stretch of beach. So let's go have a bit of an explore.
What are you hoping to
do the salvo Fran? You know what I thought. What is that?
You want to find somewhere safe for a swim?
Yeah. Let's do it.
Almost rainbow coloured
rocks here which is pretty
cool but something up here
has caught our eye.
What do you see Fran? Fresh waterfall.
It's obviously not safe for us to swim
out there at the moment with the big crocodiles around.
So these fresh water options like this
are very welcome
nice so good it's
amazing oh it's
really nice it's
like an oasis up
here beautiful
isn't it wow there's
so many pools well this is a nice one
this one's nice and clear what an
absolute treat to have a bit of fresh water to have
a swim to wash the salt off but there could
be crocodiles keep a little lookout this little stream goes for miles
and miles inland we can
kind of just hop further up river
but we've probably gone far enough this one down here
looks good for a swim friend how
the **** does this happen oh the
tender seems to have dragged off
what the bloody
hell has happened
that was terrifying
i was like
not again no it had
been hooked on this it re-hooked so drag but when
when we spotted it it was like yeah oh no
here it goes again going on the rocks yeah somehow it drags yeah
with the tide i don't know it just
did good job bloody hell i'm rooted wow this whole cliff would
have running water a waterfall coming straight
into the ocean during the wet season
a beautiful little spot to get out of the heat it's nice
wow we've made it to the other end of the beach there's
a really nice creek and a few crocodiles
like crocodile highway here
but uh still nice hey we've been
seeing few of these and they're
just coconuts fiberglassed all around with a rope on top
and i guess indonesians have been
using them as floats pretty clever i thought you
were gonna start juggling
I feel like we've probably got
30 minutes to try and catch some
dinner here we'll put our tender
out there but the tide is coming in quickly we don't want
to get stuck obviously there's a nice
deep pool here good cast Fran Fran's trying
with the lure to catch something, you're on! Nice, oh what
was it? Oh bugger, I couldn't see it. Oh, Fran had
a little mangrove jack on, but that's a good sign
that there's fish in here. What was that? Was it
a barbel? I think it was another mangrove jack
but they're hungry, yeah they're
definitely. Oh, a nice cast, oh yes
nice, nice work Fran, get him up
oh yes, that's gonna be our dinner, yes that's a really nice one
I wasn't
expecting it, it's
a beauty, look
at him, and he's
perfect for
dinner ready or
You're not, I'm coming in.
Okay, at least but not last, with pita bread.
Fish soup with bread.
It's delicious, right?
See you in the morning.
Boys, the catch of the day
Yeah, bit
of a sloppy sea state today,
throwing us all over the place.
We've got waves coming over the front.
We're sailing at about nine or 10 knots.
Hopefully it gets calmer once we get around the corner.
All right,
prepare
to jive.
There is some incredible landscapes in this bay,
white sandy beaches, and pretty amazing rocky structures.
Once again,
we're off to try and
catch some dinner.
Looking for mud crabs here.
So
we
make
sure
to
be
quiet,
to
not
spook
them.
a really good hiding spot
We're just looking for mud crabs,
and we found
a crocodile instead.
Hey, if you're eating a mud crab,
you'll find a crocodile instead.
That scared the hell out of me.
I like lowered my head underneath looking for a crab,
and there was just this crocodile face.
I was like, whoa, like eye to eye with it.
He's got a good little hiding spot under there.
Same thing, I'm almost paranoid stepping down,
thinking there's just one under every ledge
that's gonna jump out and grab ya.
New mission today, we got the metal detector strapped
to the boomerang.
State of the art.
Yeah, we're gonna detect next to the old Macassan's camps,
which are marked by the tamarind trees, aren't they?
That's right.
is not a tamarind tree this isn't
a tamarind tree we're in the wrong spot first of all
let's try our luck in here that would have had
a beautiful view there is a mystery hidden in
these islands in 1944 nine ancient coins
were discovered here beneath an uprooted tamarind tree
a tree strongly associated with all Macassan camps five
of the coins came all the way from
the Sultanate of Kilwa in East Africa
while four were Dutch coins from centuries later.
No one knows exactly how they got here
but one theory is that they travel through the vast
Makassan trading networks and were eventually traded
or gifted to the local Aboriginal people.
Any paintings?
No paintings.
Oh not that I can see yet.
Looks a good spot for it
though friend.
Getting a beep? I think it's a little buttery.
Should have read the instructions. Like some
Some caves up here, friend.
Oh, yeah.
You can't even see a boat anymore.
Hopefully it goes that way.
Hey, guys.
Oh.
You didn't see that one.
There's so many little ones.
There's so many, Jack.
Yeah.
So many little shovel noses.
Look at this guy.
Yeah.
They're tiny.
Let's put them on.
No matter we say
Oh.
What do you think, Jack?
Awesome.
Oh, my friend.
I cannot believe that.
That's how you do it.
I finally got one with the hand spear.
This is one of the diamond scale mullet we've been trying to get.
I'll put him out of his misery, but there you go.
Finally got one.
Well done.
Is it really?
That's the tuxedo bandit.
So cool.
He's just here.
Just punting our way in the shallows here,
hoping that we can drift upon a fish and Frank
can get it with a hand spear.
Big queenie crab to the right.
Yeah, go.
Oh, he's coming back.
He's coming back.
back he's coming back what'd
you get a proof that i
ain't right got a scale yes
don't snag it do you want me to drive
what have we got oh little cod little honeycomb cod
a bit small for us
Yeah, he's on again. What is it this time?
Strong one
Yeah dinner
Beautiful grassy Emperor. Yes, that's dinner friend.
I love the blue around the nose. Beautiful, eh?
Looks like there's a big rockslide on the beach.
It does doesn't it? He must be in his bay somewhere
Maybe I'll jump in it.
Looks like a glass bubble up there.
We're definitely going to have to go ashore here.
There's something which looks like a glass bubble up there.
Maybe not. Maybe just a water bottle.
This looks like a big one, Fran.
Very fresh, isn't it?
We might have even spooked him, but holy moly.
Oh my goodness.
Look at its claws.
That's crazy.
That is a big crocodile.
A very big crocodile. Look at this.
Look at that paw print.
Put your hand next to that one.
They're going near the water.
Big paws.
This is a very big
crocodile hey. The water is nice
and clear here so I reckon we're a decent
chance at spotting him.
Shall we have a walk up on the rocks and get a bit of
elevation, see if we can see him?
You wouldn't touch
the sides if he opened his mouth and
swallowed you.
Very fine. That's fine.
In amongst the rubbish. Interesting
artwork i know what that is this is what i thought
was a glass bubble fran but unfortunately not
with the sun reflection they look like
a glass bubble i will have to keep looking for the
elusive glass bubble oh i feel
like we're always looking wow look
at that one hey how's this little
cave friend, hello
there what
an amazing
rocky headland
to explore back
in here inside
the cave
it's got to be about 10 degrees cooler i reckon out
of the sun it's uh really really nice we've
never ever seen that bird i reckon it must
be almost like endemic to the island or this
uh not just this little one
but this this region it's a flightless bird a flightless bird that
hides underneath rocks on the shoreline weird i think
these are rock walls yeah yeah a cheeky
little goanna has been coming
into this turtle nest and he dug out a heap of eggs.
Got a lot of them hey, they're all little turtle eggs.
That's his trunk.
He just took off
but there was a little wallaby hidden under the tree there.
Yeah yeah that was him.
That is nice.
This is very nice.
Cheers Frank.
Beautiful.
