Step back into the golden age of 2000s Jane Austen, when Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey brought her beloved world back to life for a new generation of period drama lovers.

Across five unforgettable adaptations, the rolling hills, candlelit ballrooms, country houses and quiet drawing rooms of Austen’s imagination returned with fresh faces, rich costumes and a new wave of stars who would go on to conquer film, television, theatre and fantasy worlds far beyond Regency England.

Keira Knightley’s spirited Elizabeth Bennet became one of the defining Austen heroines of the modern era, while Matthew Macfadyen’s brooding Mr Darcy would later win new acclaim as Tom Wambsgans in Succession. Rosamund Pike’s gentle Jane Bennet went on to become the chilling Amy Dunne in Gone Girl, while Donald Sutherland’s tender Mr Bennet later reached a new generation as President Snow in The Hunger Games.

Judi Dench brought command and grandeur to Lady Catherine de Bourgh, after decades as one of Britain’s most treasured actresses. Jena Malone’s lively Lydia Bennet would later step into another huge franchise as Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games.

In Sense and Sensibility, Hattie Morahan gave Elinor Dashwood quiet strength, while Charity Wakefield’s Marianne carried all the ache of young romantic feeling. Dan Stevens appeared as Edward Ferrars before winning hearts around the world as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey. David Morrissey’s Colonel Brandon carried dignity and restraint, while Dominic Cooper’s Willoughby brought danger, charm and heartbreak.

Romola Garai’s Emma Woodhouse gave Austen’s most confident heroine warmth and wit, opposite Jonny Lee Miller’s steady Mr Knightley. Michael Gambon’s Mr Woodhouse brought tenderness and comic worry to Highbury, while Tamsin Greig’s Miss Bates turned a talkative neighbour into one of the story’s most human figures. Robert Bathurst’s Mr Weston added familiar British television charm to Emma’s village world.

In Persuasion, Sally Hawkins’s Anne Elliot carried one of Austen’s most mature love stories, while Rupert Penry-Jones gave Captain Wentworth all the pride, hurt and longing of a man who never truly forgot. Anthony Head’s vain Sir Walter Elliot and Alice Krige’s wise Lady Russell completed a world of regret, second chances and quiet emotional power.

And in Northanger Abbey, Felicity Jones’s Catherine Morland entered Austen’s playful Gothic dream, while JJ Feild’s Henry Tilney became one of the most charming Austen heroes of the decade. Carey Mulligan’s Isabella Thorpe sparkled with ambition and mischief, after already appearing as Kitty Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. Liam Cunningham’s General Tilney would later become beloved around the world as Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones.

Some became Oscar nominees. Some became television icons. Some crossed into fantasy, comedy, prestige drama and blockbuster cinema. And some we have sadly lost. Join us for a tender then-and-now journey through 24 beautiful stars who helped make Jane Austen’s 2000s golden age unforgettable.
