Want to quit smoking and nicotine today? These easy tips will help you take back control, understand your cravings, and use proven tools to quit cigarette for good. Cigarettes contain more than 7,000 chemicals, including rat poison and ammonia, that damage every part of your body. Nicotine hijacks your dopamine system and rewires your reward pathways. No wonder only about 5 % of people who quit cold turkey stay smoke‑free, and most relapse within a year. That doesn’t mean you’re weak; it means the deck is stacked against you.
In this video, nurse Sarah Jeffries — an ER veteran with years of experience explains why willpower alone isn’t enough and shares four proven strategies to quit smoking (or vaping) for good:
1. Clinical hypnosis with the Reveri app – Developed at Stanford, this clinical hypnosis helps rewire your brain’s craving pathways. A 10‑minute session helped 23 % of users quit permanently. Sarah shows how to use the Reveri app right before your usual craving time to break the cycle.
2. Nicotine replacement therapy done right – Patches and gum work best when used together: start with a patch in the morning for steady dopamine, then use gum or spray when cravings hit to disrupt the pattern. Changing up your nicotine delivery breaks the loop the way casinos break patterns to keep people hooked — but here we’re using that psychology to get unhooked.
3. Replace the ritual – Smoking isn’t just about nicotine; it’s about routine and emotion. Swap cigarettes after meals for lemon water or mint gum, keep a fidget ring or toothpick in the car, and step outside for box breathing instead of a smoke. The goal is to disrupt old associations and add healthier habits.
4. Behavioral support – Quitting alone is tough. People who quit with support from a friend, coach, counsellor or online group are three times more likely to succeed. Even one accountability buddy makes a huge difference.
5. Bonus: Expect slips. If you have a cigarette tomorrow, you didn’t fail — you learned a trigger. Quitting is messy, but each attempt makes you stronger. It will be one of the hardest things you ever do, but also one of the most life‑changing. Your body, your future self, and your loved ones will thank you.

So I know you've thought of quitting smoking more than once
and maybe something pulled you back in.
So I want to tell you something important.
It's not your fault that you haven't been able to quit.
The system is rigged.
The addiction to cigarettes is so powerful,
but you're stronger than that.
Today, I'm going to show you how to actually quit smoking,
not white-knuckle your way through it,
but do it with tools that actually work.
Now, some of these methods are free,
some of them are a bit weird,
and some are backed by science.
My name's now Sarah Jeffries.
I'm an emergency room nurse,
and I've seen what smoking does to people,
but I've also seen what happens when somebody finally quits.
So let's talk about how you can be one of those people.
Before I start, let's just stop pretending
that quitting smoking is all about willpower,
because it's not.
It's chemical warfare.
Cigarettes contain over 7,000 chemicals.
I've said that before.
But just to remind you,
every time you light up,
you have rat poison in there,
you have ammonia,
you have methanol,
that's rubbing alcohol.
These chemicals damage your lungs,
they damage your blood vessels,
your hormones, your skin,
your fertility, your sleep,
the list goes on.
There's no goodness about them.
And you already know that.
That's the worst part.
And yet, you're still doing it.
Why?
Because nicotine hijacks your dopamine system.
It rewires your reward pathways.
It creates a craven loop that's stronger than logic,
stronger than fear,
stronger than anything.
That's not weakness.
That's brain chemistry.
And beating it takes way more than willpower.
Here's the reality that no one tells you.
Only 5% of people who quit cold turkey
are actually successful in doing so.
And even then,
65% of those people relapse within the first year.
So if you've tried it,
and you've failed,
and you've relapsed after a week,
you're not alone.
It's okay.
The truth is,
you need a strategy.
And I'm going to give you
four of the most effective ones,
plus a bonus tip at the end
that could completely change the game.
Now, strategy number one is clinical hypnosis.
This surprises a few people.
Now, before you roll your eyes
and dismiss it completely,
you're not going to be a chicken clucking on stage.
It's not that type of hypnosis.
It's clinical hypnosis.
And this was developed by Stanford.
It helps rewire your brain's craven pathways.
And what's even more amazing about hypnosis is that
they claim that after one 10-minute session,
23% of people quit smoking permanently.
That's nearly 5% better than cold turkey.
Now, there's a free app called Reverie.
I'll link it below.
You can use it right now,
wherever you are,
without anybody knowing that you've got it on your phone.
It's private.
It's proven.
And it might just be the thing that works for you.
Now, a tip for this,
if you use it right before your craven time,
it's supposed to be most effective.
So this is usually in the morning for most smokers.
Now, strategy number two,
a lot of people try patches and gum.
This is the most successful thing,
but they often give up too early.
Now, the secret is,
it isn't which one you use,
but it's how you use them together.
Now, here's the approach that I recommend.
It's backed by research as well.
So it's not just my opinion.
You can start with a nicotine patch in the morning.
It gives you a steady dopamine hit
and prevents early withdrawal.
And then switch to gum or a nicotine spray.
And that gives your body a little boost
and prevents cravens of binge smoking.
And you can change this up every few days.
Now, your brain is craving the pattern of smoking.
It's craving that pattern of the nicotine from the cigarettes.
So if you interrupt that pattern
with changing up your nicotine supply,
it's really going to help.
And it works because your brain is expecting the nicotine hit.
And at the same time, in the same way,
if you break that pattern,
then you break the loop.
It's actually the same psychology
that casinos use to keep you hooked.
And you're going to use it to get yourself unhooked.
Now, strategy three is about replacing the ritual.
You often light up after stress,
after coffee,
you know, while you're driving with friends,
whatever is your usual pattern
when you have a cigarette.
To quit successfully,
you're going to have to break this pattern.
Now, some powerful swaps,
such as if you crave a cigarette after food,
sip on some lemon water or suck a gum or a mint.
If you crave it in the car,
keep a fidget ring handy
or even a toothpick nearby
just to replace the cigarette with your toothpick.
Just chew on that instead.
Now, if your ritual is you go outside
because you're stressed,
you have a cigarette,
step outside anyway,
but do some calming breathing
instead of the inhaling from your cigarettes.
Instead, do calming breathing.
Try box breathing
where you picture a box in your mind
and you inhale for four,
exhale for four,
inhale for four.
That's the same breathing as you do
and when you're having your cigarette,
you're going to relax yourself.
You're still getting rid of your stress,
but you're not killing your body at the same time.
The goal here is to disrupt the association.
Now, it's not about taking something away,
it's about adding something better.
Strategy number four is behavioural support.
So let me be blunt,
quitting the loan for you is going to be really hard.
It's terrible, I hear.
But people who quit with support,
whether it's from a friend, a coach, family, whoever,
they're three times as likely to succeed.
Now, that support could be a group of online friends.
I know Facebook has lots of groups that help you quit.
You could have a counsellor.
Even accountability texts from friends and family.
I'm sure you've got friends and family
who want you to quit smoking.
So let them know that you need their support.
So they're going to be there for you
through texts, phone calls, whatever.
Now, I'm not saying go out there
and post it on social media.
Just tell one friend and say,
look, I'm thinking about quitting.
Can you support me?
And if they say no,
well, you don't need that mate anymore, do you?
If you quit and then you have a cigarette the next day,
you didn't fail, you just learned something new.
You learned a trigger.
You learned how you're feeling emotionally about it.
You learned whether it was your routine
or your social pressure.
Next time, you'll be ready for that.
It's not a straight line.
It's really messy,
but you'll keep trying and you'll eventually get there.
Now, the truth is quitting smoking
is going to be one of the hardest things you've ever done,
but it's also going to be one of the most life-changing.
Your body's going to thank you later.
Your future self is going to thank you.
Your kids, your family, your lungs, your skin.
They're all thankful.
So here's your next step.

Tell someone and come back here and let me know how it goes.
I'm rooting for you.
I've seen people do it.
I know you can do it too.
