The real reason you wake up at 3 a.m. every night isn't stress, caffeine, or your mattress.
It's a hormone shift happening at an exact point in your sleep cycle and there are 4 habits that can actually help you sleep better.
Registered nurse and sleep specialist Sarah Jeffries breaks down exactly why this happens and what actually helps.
Cortisol and melatonin work like a dimmer switch through the night with melatonin fading out while cortisol slowly rises. That crossover point usually lands around your normal wake up time but for a lot of people it can start landing hours earlier, sometimes right around 3 a.m.

Your body's temperature regulation shifts around this time too, which is part of why one fix rarely works alone.
This isn't only about cortisol rising because progesterone plays a bigger role than most people realize. It's the hormone that normally helps calm your brain and hold that cortisol rise back. As progesterone drops that buffer weakens and the same cortisol rise that used to slip past you can actually wake you up.
Sarah also shares a few practical fixes that can help steady this pattern such as protecting your wake time, keeping the bedroom cool, and cutting off alcohol before bed.
This isn't a diagnosis, and other things like sleep apnea or blood sugar issues can cause the same pattern.
If this is happening continuously, bring it up with your doctor instead of trying to work around it.
