The more hardships one faces the more likely it is that heaven is quietly shielding them
Long ago there was a mountain called Qingliang Mountain
At the foot of the mountain lived a young porter named Huệ Dân
Every day while chopping firewood on the mountain Huệ Dân would see a white-haired monk with snow-white eyebrows
Sitting quietly in meditation beneath the pine rock formation
One day heavy rain poured down like a torrent water rushing in torrents from the mountain slope
Hue Dan stared at the pile of firewood she'd labored to chop all morning now washed away by the flood
Heart heavy she sank down onto a rock and sighed deeply
At that moment the deceitful monk slowly
approached His voice was sharp and agitated
Little devotee you may not realize that today's loss might not be anything but tomorrow's blessing
Hui Min replied with a smile
Master please don't say those cold heartless words I've used up all the
firewood—tomorrow I won't have anything to trade for rice and hunger is certain
The old monk remained calm silently pulling from his sleeve a tiny bead the size of a fingernail glowing with a golden brown hue
He said the old cultivator wanted to spar fiercely with the young disciple
If three months from now you still believe today's event was a bad thing I'll give you a sack of rice
And if you recognize this as a good deed then please help the temple plant this bodhi seed
Hue Dan let out a quiet scoff thinking to herself Sounds
like a joke—what could possibly come from something so tiny
But he thought what's the harm He took it to get the matter settled
To her astonishment as she was heading home that day Huệ Dân found the footpath beneath the mountain—once a familiar side trail of hers—completely destroyed by the flood
Rocks tumbled down and muddy water rushed violently
If he hadn't lost his firewood and paused to complain earlier he'd likely be swept away by the current by now
A flicker of shock surged through Huệ Dân’s heart but she stubbornly kept her voice steady
It’s just a coincidence that’s all
The next morning Huệ Dân woke up earlier than usual thinking she had to cut just as much today as she’d lost yesterday to avoid going hungry
But as they ventured deeper into the forest following a mountain ravine newly carved open by a flash flood
He was surprised to discover a patch of land covered in a rare valuable medicinal herb
Hue Dan quickly gathered a bunch and rushed down to sell at the pharmacy in town
The shopkeeper exclaimed in astonishment saying it was from a sacred herb a rare medicinal plant typically found in treacherous inaccessible places where no one dared to go
Normally it's hard to find half a stalk all year long
Yet yesterday thanks to the flood breaking through the rock wall clusters of lingzhi were exposed
The money Huidan earned from that bundle of medicinal herbs was three times what she would make in a week chopping firewood
On his way home the old monk's words echoed in his mind but Hui Min pretended not to care
Upon returning home he went quietly to the backyard silently sowing bodhi seeds into a patch of clean soil then covering them over with earth
A month later within the city walls a large proclamation was posted
The court recruited laborers to repair the fortress working from morning till night yet their wages were quite generous
Hue Dan thought long and hard before deciding
to sign her name On the day assignments were announced Hue Dan was placed on the repair team stationed in the most dangerous location
Cliff of the jagged rock a sheer needle-like promontory a narrow path as thin as a knife's edge where one misstep could mean a fatal plunge into the abyss
On the fifth day of construction a sudden disaster struck when a large boulder tumbled down from above
Striking Huệ Dân's left leg forcefully it sent him crashing to the ground in agonizing pain
At first sight he rushed over immediately His face turned pale with fright and
he quickly had someone carry Huệ Dân back to the village to rest
Then handed him a small amount of money as a gratuity instructing him to rest
and recover in peace and temporarily hire someone else to fill his position
Hue Dan lay on the bamboo bed staring down at her swollen bruised leg
Her heart was a turmoil of emotions—sadness shame and anxiety about the future
I don't know where this accident will take my life During
the recovery days he could hardly do anything strenuous
They could only sit leaning against the wall idly sawing and carving small pieces of wood to pass the time
Seeing that the children next door still often ran
over to play he casually tossed them a few wooden tops
Sometimes a cat sometimes a dog sometimes a tiny doll
To their surprise the children were absolutely delighted hugging those odd little toys tightly like cherished treasures
One child brought one home to show off then two then three
Before long the entire neighborhood knew Huệ Dân made beautiful wooden toys
The children's parents seeing this began arriving one after
another—some wanting a fabric tiger others a wooden horse
They asked him to make a small gazelle to hang above the baby's cradle
Hue Dân though still in pain persevered carefully crafting each item while applying medicine to her foot as she worked
When someone brought those products to the village market for a trial sale
Never expected it to sell out so quickly—everyone who sees it loves it and everyone wants to buy one for their child
Before long this small woodworking job became his primary source of income
sustaining him day by day until he could return to the construction site
Just then grim news arrived from the Nanh Ung mining region leaving everyone stunned
The construction site suddenly experienced a severe landslide
Rocks and soil tumbled down from above like a cataclysmic collapse of heaven and earth
The entire group of 12 workers inside was buried under the collapse
All 12 perished with no survivors
Even more alarming the person who had just taken Huệ Dân's position was none other than the
individual who had assumed the role after the man was injured—someone who was also among those present
Had Huệ Dân not been struck in the leg that day he would
now be one of the lifeless bodies buried beneath the rubble
Five years later at the village festival near the temple on the mountain the
reputation of Mộc Phường Huệ Dân's carpentry shop had spread far and wide
He doesn't make wooden toys alone but also chairs small statues and carved
paintings generously creating items for orphaned children in the area
He taught them carpentry provided them with food and shelter and also showed them how to be kind and decent people
Right next to the carpentry shop the bodhi tree that the old man once gave to him stands
Just one seed grew into a lush shady tree providing cool relief
One afternoon Huệ Dân gathered the disciples beneath the shade
of that bodhi tree and recounted her experiences from years past
Zi Sun said that our mind is like the still surface of a pond When
events occur they are merely reflections on the water's surface
Jumping to the conclusion that it's good or bad
is no different than throwing a stone into a pond
urning the water murky rippling and churning until
we can no longer see the true nature of the matter
Let the surface of the water calm down when the mind becomes still the truth of all things
will become clear He said that only later did he understand the words of that deceitful monk from years ago
It's all for the better
It's not advice that makes people indifferent
or resigned but a reminder to maintain inner calm amidst upheaval
That flood that year was a disaster for
others but for him it was a lifeline
The wooden carving he made while recovering which meant nothing to anyone
else turned out to be the chance that changed the course of his life
Sometimes what seems不利 turns out to hold within it a seed of something good
Just as this tiny bodhi seed has grown into a tree
Huệ dân recounted that ever since that upheaval whenever faced with hardship
He no longer dwelled on self-pity or asked why it had to be him but
instead began asking himself: What
can I do right now in this situation
If in the past he had merely sat there cursing the heavens and earth over his injured leg
there would never have been this thriving shop today
There's no longer an opportunity to help as many children as there is today
Just as he reached this point in his words the old white-haired monk from years ago unexpectedly passed by
Her demeanor remained calm and composed just as it had been from the
beginning Huệ immediately rose to her feet respectfully bowing her head
The old monk smiled gently gazing at the bodhi tree and then at Huimin and said
It's clear that the bodhi seed has not only grown into a tree in the courtyard
but has also taken deep root within your heart
Hui Ming gazed up at the vast blue sky
A deep long-suppressed question welled up within him one he'd never had the chance to voice
He spoke slowly asking the old monk who had once guided him long ago
whether back then when the two of them had wagered a single bodhi seed
Could it be that the person already knew in advance everything that would happen afterward
The old monk simply smiled gently bowed his head and picked up a dry twig from the corner
Then gently snapped it in two the crisp crack echoing through the silent air
He replied slowly that he certainly couldn't foresee the future
let alone be a fairy who knew the secrets of fate
They had simply seen too many dead branches fail to sprout yet also
witnessed countless new shoots bursting forth after harsh winters
One must understand the natural order When winter lies
dormant spring inevitably arrives after barrenness life flourishes anew—everything unfolds
within the eternal cycle of heaven and earth
The one who said that as long as people cling to the two words good and bad gain and loss luck and misfortune
en it's no different from turning oneself into a fragile branch
constantly swayed by life's winds never finding a stable ground to stand on
Only when a person stops seeing themselves as an enemy stops
tormenting themselves and stops measuring gains and losses
Only then could they grow strong and steady like a
sturdy branch calm at heart even as the wind brushed past
A gentle breeze from the mountain sweeps through the trees
rustling the young bodhi leaves into a shimmering dance
as if whispering a timeless truth passed down through generations
Nothing in the world inherently possesses good or evil nature
It's only because people label things themselves that they end up creating their own troubles
When a person no longer binds themselves with the rope of distinguishing right
from wrong good from evil that is when they truly open the door to freedom
Walk freely without suffering over things that aren't worth it
Life sometimes gives us gifts whose true value isn't apparent at first glance
can be rough jagged even causing a sharp pain when touched
But deep within every adversity every challenge
Every seemingly unfair circumstance is a hidden
opportunity a precious lesson a step toward growth
A new gentle path that life quietly opens for us Work
left unfinished a changing road an old door closing
It's not an end but a path opening up
ahead—brighter truer to one's own journey
Losses bring more than just sorrow they
come to remind us to let go of attachment
Understanding impermanence learn to live more lightly
People suffer so much simply because they cling too tightly to the past
by endlessly resisting what cannot be changed
by forever facing life itself and confronting one's own self
But when a person stops that struggle
no longer resisting no longer resenting
no longer turning themselves in circles of judgment
They will realize that the very place where they once stumbled is precisely
where the waters gathered to form a reservoir of blessings in the future
The thorns that pierced the heart long ago
once thought to be a pain too deep to fade
Yet over time it has transformed into a protective armor that makes
us stronger more resilient and more mature in the face of life's storms
The true strength of a
person does not lie in
avoiding storms or trying to flee the tempest
They knew how to learn to dance right there in the middle of the storm itself Not that
they hadn’t been uncertain but that they
dared to keep moving forward even while unsure
Not that I've never been afraid to
pick it but rather that I've carried
the fear of picking it within me and still chose to move forward
When the mind is
at peace the path ahead naturally becomes calm
When resentment ceases
struggle ends
and stubbornness dissolves
en life naturally
grows gentle once more
It turns out that reconciling with life is indeed reconciling with oneself And
when we learn to open our hearts
be willing to sit down and truly listen
to oneself be willing to let go of what has
weighed you down for so long and
naturally the wind becomes gentle the rain grows soft
The road is
wide and the heart is clear
Looking back on Huệ Dân's story
we clearly see a profound truth:
what seemed like misfortune was in fact a hidden blessing
It is precisely the seed of blessings
This is no coincidence but rather
the mysterious law of cause and
effect taught by the Buddha Shakyamuni
for over 2 000 years
has taught us that every
event carries within it
a lesson a transformation
a chance to grow
In every step of Huệ Dân's life the
Dharma has always been quietly present
the bundle of firewood swept away by the flood serving to avert disaster
The flood paved the way for the lingzhi mushroom to
emerge a broken leg from an accident became
the beginning of a new career
Saved countless orphaned children through surgery
Every event that occurs whether painful or joyful
is a mirror reflecting the karmic connections of life
Just as the Buddha taught one should
not merely look at what is visible before
the eyes but delve
deeply into the dependent origination of all phenomena
When the mind still distinguishes good
from bad profit from loss it inevitably
casts itself into suffering When the mind is calm wisdom naturally shines
the repentance scripture
where hell teaches eight verses
deeply imbued with the spirit of awakening
Perfectly aligned with the principle of Huệ dân's
teachings These stories remind
us that to escape suffering
must turn back to examine oneself completely uproot
greed hatred and delusion so
that wisdom may fully emerge
When the mind is cleansed like a mirror free
of dust all things become
clear Just as Huì Dà
When grievances cease and distinctions between right and wrong are let go and one
no longer acts out of emotion virtue and
wisdom naturally arise The Buddha Shakyamu
He is the Master who showed
us the way—not by shielding us
from storms but by teaching
us how to walk steadily through them
It does not tell us to eradicate
adversity but to transform
adversity into strength It does not promise blessings
and bestowed upon me the wisdom to plant blessings myself
And then when Hui
Min reached the final taste of the old monk
The bodhi tree in front of the courtyard sways
gently as if affirming that the truth of the Buddha's teachings
has taken root in the heart of those who listen with awareness
His final words echoed like a gentle
breeze through the leaves Life itself has
no inherent good or evil only suffering
and joy—shaped entirely by our own minds
Creating confusion and suffering through
self-deception When we cease being
our own enemy peace naturally arises May
each of us be blessed with this
Even in the face of storms they know how to look within
breathe slowly and trust in the wondrous law of cause
and effect as taught by the Buddha
Every loss is a lesson every
suffering a chance for growth and
every fall a foundation
Take the next step with greater strength
Wishing you always
be guided by the light
of Buddha Shakyamuni with peaceful hearts
peaceful and pure mind blessings grow

Homage to our Buddha Shakyamuni Calming
the fragrance harmonizing with the flow of the sacred stream embracing one's true nature
The emerald river winds like a soft silk ribbon wrapped around the hills
That is a tranquil countryside
Fertile soil simple-hearted people
The ripening rice season golden fields
shimmering like a celestial silk carpet
Wind swept through making waves of rice sway like a
golden sea The scent of straw
blended with the river breeze
filling the air with a rich lingering fragrance
Midday the sharp clang of blacksmithing echoes from the far end of the village
Hoping once again to blend with the sound of children learning to read
the temple's wooden bell tolls clearly
their sounds intertwining seamlessly
become a peaceful and enduring rhythm of life
In this serene setting
two young men gained fame throughout the region
Zhao Yunsheng and Cong Chongmin The
people of Chaomian Village referred to them
as the Twin Heroes of Zhao and Cong due
to the deep friendship between the two
close-knit as if blood relatives
One was a gentle scholar
embodying the grace of Confucian learning
A strong sharp-witted and
resourceful blacksmith—two seemingly
opposing traits that blend
together like fire and water
One side illuminates the other hones
together forging the enduring silhouette of two virtuous friends
golden across the town
Zhao Yunsheng was the only
son of a poor scholarly family
His father passed away when he was just eight years old
leaving behind a mother whose hair turned prematurely white from hardship
The small thatched house beside
the village well with a slanted
roof and moss-covered earthen walls yet within its walls
always filled with the warmth of filial
devotion and moral integrity each dawn at
first light Yun Sheng awakens
Before the rooster crows she carries water gathers firewood lights the
fire brews tea for her mother and only then sits down to study at her desk
The light from the oil lamp
cast upon his gaunt face his
eyes clear and bright as a
stream calm and still as a mirror
The villagers often said "That boy from the
family of Zhao may be poor but he has the
bearing of a scholar a heart as clear as a mirror and one day he will surely change his fate "
by virtue and moral integrity
In contrast the son of the renowned
blacksmith was known for his arrogance
He grew up amidst red flames and steel his body strong and
sturdy his skin tanned by the
sun his hands calloused yet deft
His words were sweet and charming each one landing perfectly in the ear At
just fifteen he had already set up his
own small forge at the edge of town
While sharpening farming tools he also
traded iron across three surrounding counties Some
praised his skill while others muttered jealously
saying that being too clever could be dangerous
But in Zhao Yunsheng's eyes those who valued the people remained
true companions brothers with whom
he could share half a bowl of rice
Hungry as they were One embraced
the island the other shouldered the world
one devoted to words the other forging steel
In the fire like two wings of the
same bird they soared together through
a peaceful sky When they were young
they once shared a crust of dry bread
During the famine they took turns receiving beatings from the
teacher then sat beneath the ginkgo
tree together reading an old book
Everyone in Xung Hoa village believed that
these two individuals would become renowned—one
through scholarship the other through craftsmanship
Future generations would remember them
She would never betray her ancestors
In her twenties Triệu
Vân married Lý Ngọc Kiểu
the only daughter of a fallen official
Having once been demoted for
opposing corruption she despite her
noble origins had long since
fallen from grace Yu Kieu was now
Raised with meticulous care from a young
age graceful and dignified
her voice as soft as silk her hands so deft that flowers seemed to bloom on fabric
as if alive The day she came to join the Triệu family the sky was
as clear as a mirror white clouds
drifting lazily and every villager was
She came too wearing a blue silk
robe and a silk headscarf her
head bowed in respectful farewell to her frail mother-in-law
a gentle demeanor that left everyone
praising the Trinh family as blessed Their
simple but peaceful life as young spouses
though modest brought quiet contentment
A thatched roof mud walls a simple wooden table stacks of old poetry
books smelling of aged paper Van was
born on the day she began teaching
At night Jade Queen recites sutras and in the
daytime she cooks rice and tends to her mother-in-
law with great care They live by
Filial piety rooted in ritual propriety
runs as deep as water Everyone says the Zhao
family though poor is blessed for within that
humble home kindness and compassion flourish
Honest and upright with a pure and virtuous heart
True enlightenment does not arise from the vast
ocean but from the stillness within one's own mind
That year a million clouds gathered with unwavering
resolve to ascend to the celestial examination
bringing fame and honor back to repay his
mother ’s kindness and to uphold the family lineage
Before leaving the aging mother held her
son’s hand her voice trembling as she gave him final words
The reader must maintain integrity—words matter but the
heart must not be lost Yuqiao
bit her lip sitting in silence
All night long she delicately wrote a small message on the
handkerchief waiting for him
to return Beneath the moonlight
They held hands their vow of eternal bond rising
like gold amidst the river's whispering breeze
No one knew
but that very promise would become the beginning
of a great calamity At the time Zhong
Min had already risen to success
his forge burning fiercely day and night
Many laborers were employed and wealth was abundant
He often brought gifts to visit their home sometimes a bundle of firewood other times
A little medicine sometimes carrying water for others
Everyone in the village praised him for his sense of loyalty
yet only heaven and earth knew what was truly in his heart
He lit a small flame
— the fire of greed
and desire— quietly burning unseen
At first Ngọc Kiều still observed
the formalities addressing her
as "elder sister" and "you" out of respect but as time passed
Empty rooms the oil lamp's glow each night
cast shadows on the old wall softening
the heart Zhongmin once again spoke
with skill—every word like spring breeze
filled his heart He didn’t speak words of love
just asked after him just gazed deeply
just quietly offered help But
it was precisely this quietness that stirred
The lonely woman trembled
The villagers began to whisper
that even dry straw can catch fire after
time but everyone thought it was merely
Gossip turned out to be fate No one could have imagined that
rumor would become destiny One
was her husband gentle and kind
The words were clear
yet the future remained distant and uncertain On one side
was her husband's friend—wealthy powerful
skilled at winning hearts In one moment—
Autumn night the willow shadows tilting in the breeze
dew dampening the porch Yuqiao
took one misstep and that step would change everything
She spent her entire life drowning in guilt That
night the moon shone as bright as a mirror
the scent of wine drifting gently on the breeze
The faint scent of lipstick lingers in the corner of
the room In the morning Ngọc Kiều glanced into the mirror
and saw her eyes no longer held their former clarity
as before In that gaze lay guilt fear
and yet beneath it all a lingering
consuming longing She wanted to
forget but karma would not let her
There was a wall to separate them Once
planted the seed would surely sprout
From that day on Chongmin visited the
Zhao family's home more frequently
Others thought he was merely helping his
close friend’s elderly mother but his
eyes no longer held innocence Yu Kieu once shy
and reserved had gradually transformed
Expectation A touch of
the hand a shared
glance —meaning fades like fabric left out in the rain
Meanwhile in the capital study continued day and night
letters home grew scarce and
funds ran dangerously low Yuèqiáo
The more she flaunts her vanity the more he displays his wealth
He wears fine silk adorns himself with
jade and uses cosmetics to charm her
She was afraid yet her heart remained soft
A single misstep and a thousand lifetimes couldn't turn
back the tide Rumors spread like smoke
The village was slow to stir but Ngọc Kiều pretended not to hear still going to the early market Returning late
her clothes carried the scent of the place
The blacksmith's forge smoke hung thick in the air eyes wide with awe One
day Zhao Yunsheng failed
the examination and returned home and as he stepped into the village's entrance heard
Sarcastic remarks hidden behind forced smiles No self-reproach
the villagers still believe in
her even as they turn against her
Trust me but even the sharpest needle will
eventually show its tip
On a sweltering afternoon
Vân Sinh crouched beneath the ginkgo tree at the alley's entrance
Her eyes locked onto Ngọc Kiều stepping out from the communal house The sheer blouse
shoulder slumped lips pale eyes wide with panic A
gust of wind swept by golden
leaves fell faith wavered
Even in his heart the monk too departed from that scene
Yunsheng did not curse did not strike
he simply quietly turned back gathering a few old robes
I wrapped the books left behind a letter on the
table its few lines blurred
by rain I stepped aside
In the end home people memories—everything fades
Yet the heart of a person cannot be
forced That night heavy rain poured from the sky
The thunder roared loudly Someone saw a figure wearing a shoulder bag
and a conical hat passing over the
stone bridge a sack on their shoulder
old cloth The next morning the
house stood locked the kitchen
smoke cold On the table remained
a teacup half-drunk beside
Those were half-burnt scriptures The villagers
thought the matter had ended with a rainy night
But little did they know that it was precisely
at the moment of bearing Yunsheng's burden—
Leaving behind the scent of incense
true karmic bonds finally began
to take root After that rainy night Yun Sheng departed the village
Like a soulless figure he led his aging mother by the hand
through muddy paths silently
making his way to Zhijiang County
Where no one knew their name they
endured There he begged to work as a
ledger keeper for a small rice shop by
the riverside counting during the day
Each rice sack left his hands dusty with palm fibers
At night he spread his mat
beside the oil lamp continuing to read
The passing of time through the thatched
roof echoes the ancient sound
of the temple bell while he continues to write with steady hand his heart untouched by resentment
He thought if kindness has already
been sown why let hatred
water it Time passed and heaven never
forsakes those with sincere hearts
After two years of examinations Yun Sheng
was awarded the golden list his father having
served as county magistrate and gradually
advanced in rank due to his integrity and virtue
Two years later he was appointed magistrate of Yongfeng
County a region just under a
hundred miles from his hometown
Yet throughout that time he never
once returned to Xinghua Whenever he
passed the old path he would merely
stand afar his heart calm and still
like a tiger's face Meanwhile back
in the old village the respected
elder seemed to have gained everything
He took Li Yuqiao as his wife
Expanding furnace lush fields
neat homes Anyone looking
would think he’d won at life
But in an instant all changed
His foundation has already been tainted for what he built was not through righteousness but betrayal
In the early days he valued the people
Still passionate still speaking sweetly still treating with
courtesy the woman who had once
been your best friend's wife
He thought that with money
and jade any sin
could be concealed But human hearts are not like iron
The easiest thing is often the most fragile
After some time
when lustful desires cool down
In his heart reverence for the people
had long since turned
to emptiness He began frequenting brothels and took courtesans as concubines
One person then another—always
talkative full of schemes Those
who once praised his
brilliance now whisper behind his back
You might be rich but can you really
sleep soundly Your best friend’s
ex-wife too—how can you trust anyone
now Those words pierced like needles
But the greedy official pretended not to hear and
gradually retribution quietly knocked at his door Li Yuqiao
Once praised for her gentle grace she now dwells amidst golden halls
yet finds no peace within her heart
Each night she sits by the window
Gazing at the moonlight filtering
through the wooden slats hearing the laughter
of the concubines below tears fell
She recalls those old days poor
yet pure when her
husband would chant sutras and strike the wooden fish at the thatched porch
Her beauty was dazzling yet her heart was colder than snow
Zhong Min was no longer gentle
he mocked her cruelly
Angry over a salty bowl of soup just
because the gaze wasn't soft enough
Lý Ngọc Kiểu was scolded and beaten
once even falling onto the
tile floor blood streaming from his lips yet he still bowed his head meekly enduring
He once promised me he'd love me
forever He let out
a dry hollow laugh
Promises empty as the wind did she truly think I needed her The
shame seeped in day by day like
poison slowly dripping into my heart
Every night she was consumed by turmoil unsure whether from regret
or resentment One
day she remembered the sage
Each time she passed through
the old town she would stop by the
herbalist's stall selling tonic charms She came seeking a certain medicine known as Wu Ling San
The potion that induces a daze making the drinker easily manipulated without causing death At first she
merely added a few drops to the wine
Obsessed with him she listened to the advice
her lips curling into a
bitter smile If I can't make him
love me then I'll make him fear me
But evil deeds never
cease when one wishes them to they naturally
sprout new branches These
concubines were no ordinary women
They were sharp-tongued quick
-witted women who didn't take long to
detect the scent of medicine in the wine and rice
And then one day the three of them went together to Nha Men
to file a complaint Accusation: the crime of
poisoning her husband with malicious intent
The crime is as heavy as Mount Tai even
though no one has died
the intent alone constitutes a grave offense
The ironic twist was that the person
entrusted by the court to deliver the verdict was
none other than Zhao Yunsheng the upright official
Just appointed in Vinh Phu he froze
in shock upon seeing the criminal 's
name For a moment silence stretched on like an entire lifetime
When Ly Ngoc Kieu was led to court it was
pouring rain She wore
a coarse cotton robe
Bound and head bowed low amid the thunder and the
crack of whips only the voice of the magistrate
seated on the bench could be heard
Silence echoed softly Law
prevails over kinship When
she looked up she saw that
face—the husband of long ago
It was different now No longer
the gentle scholarly demeanor but the calm
of one who had fully grasped the
truths of life Vân Sinh's eyes held no anger
And there was no
longer love only a faint lingering
sorrow in a lost soul The
indictment was read aloud
Each word like a blade
cutting through Li Thi Ngoc Kieu poisoned her husband with treacherous intent
Though no death resulted she caused lasting harm
National crime
Twelve years of hard labor in a
remote penal colony Upon hearing this
Li Yuqiao sank down in despair
She wept silently her tears mingling with the rain
falling onto the cold ground like a
farewell from the messenger of death
Being a man of the people and due
to his spiritual confusion he was exempted from punishment The three
concubines divided the land among themselves and
used the proceeds to flee in separate directions
To cherish the
people one who once stood arrogantly in the marketplace
now remains only a
tattered body a mind twisted and broken
From then on he lived like a sleepwalker By day
he staggered through the market picking up
bamboo scraps discarded by others
At night sitting
beneath the old forge's porch he laughs
and talks to himself Sometimes he hugs a rusted iron bar
Hitting the stone muttering under his breath
I'm forging the Emperor forging the entire world
He might suddenly laugh while gazing at the moon
Then crying out "Vân Sinh
I'm not trying to hurt you I just
wanted to be a little better
than you " People watched him walk by
No one dared come near They said
it was a living ghost the price paid
by the man who stole his friend's
wife No one threw stones no one scolded
by the crime itself enforcing its own punishment
Meanwhile in court
each time a case was closed
Trieu Van sat im very long time He was neither
happy nor satisfied At
night he quietly lit a lamp
chanting a sutra to dedicate merit
may those who are lost awaken soon may
the karmic debts of
this life be swiftly cleared the light flickers and sways
His shadow on the wall resembled a statue
bowing in reverence before fate From that
day on the village of Hùng Hóa no longer had a forge blazing with fire
Only charred roof tiles remain
leaning walls collapsed and
slumping sideways Passersby fall silent as they walk by
as if fearing the ghostly echo of an old hammer's strike
Someone said
that place was once where knives were forged
Forging iron forging one's fate as well
After the case the name of
the respected citizen was still
mentioned but not with admiration
but through a warning
The villagers told their descendants never be like him—no matter how rich you
become it's not worth
as much as keeping one word of integrity
As for Lý Ngọc Kiểu after
being exiled to the frontier her once
-dark hair now streaked with
white her body emaciated and frail
With every step she took the mud seemed to swallow her feet whole She didn't stumble
on anyone only wandered aimlessly The path we walk
is not one in the heavens but here on earth
It wasn't about
the person Other prisoners said that every night she would sit gazing at the moon holding
a piece of old cloth with the two
characters "Vân Sinh" embroidered on it
His eyes stared blankly as if trying to pull his soul out of his body
One day a young
woman in the prisoner convoy asked "Auntie
who is this person
named Van Sinh " She gave a wistful smile
She was the one I relied on the
only one who ever truly loved me The words
spread through the group and each
person who heard them bowed their head
In the cold where mountain
mist blankets everything
sometimes her stifled sobs
blend with the howling wind
as a belated act of repentance
Meanwhile in Vinh Phong District Mr Van Sinh continues to
live a life of integrity and simplicity
The people of the Kinh Phuc area
They called him the righteous magistrate of the Zhao clan He judged cases fairly and cared
for the people as if they were his own
children The poor without official documents
He personally went to clear the innocent
man's name even when falsely accused He
went in person to settle the matter Anyone
who plotted harm against the common people—
He quietly reflected impartial to
the powerful and noble the name of
the great minister became a source of comfort for the common people
Yet deep within him there remained a
silent emptiness Every night he lit
a small lamp by the window and recited
sutras chanting Buddhist prayers
Each prayer washes away an
old wound Sometimes he remembers his
old friend the humble man Not
with resentment but with compassion
He silently thought if only he had known to stop at mere
words if only he had valued the other's feelings
then today he might still be my friend
As for Ngoc Kieu he no longer
harbored resentment Love had turned to dust
yet his heart still wished for her to
find a way out of the cycle of fate
A year later the imperial court promoted him to a higher rank
People throughout the region rejoiced
offering prayers and gifts in celebration But in
the middle of the night
Vân Sinh once again left the county alone carrying an
old box of scriptures heading
toward Stone Ridge mountain
a place where ancient temple lies hidden deep within a pine forest The
palace staff believed
the official had gone to inspect the border region
but instead he had come seeking the temple’s abbot
He stayed for three months to study the way
The Zen master looked at him and smiled faintly
One whose heart is like water why still suffer
The young man bowed his head
Though the water was still the bottom remained covered in moss
From then on each day
he swept the temple courtyard and boiled water
Chanting sutras and meditating beneath the pine corner
As he left the temple Zen
master Tiễn Trân gave him a saying:
Blessings come not from overcoming
others but from overcoming oneself
He engraved those words into his heart for life Upon returning
to the county
the girl's presence grew even more elusive He
did not build a grand house
He built only a small hermitage by the
stream His aging mother was cared for
with utmost devotion while he devoted most of his stipend to aiding the poor
Setting up free classes for
orphaned children building a bridge across the stream
so villagers can travel during flood season
When asked why he wouldn't
take on a little more he simply replied
this life I need only peace with the
island If there's new fate perhaps—
It came from a kind-hearted person
Indeed that fortunate connection arrived that autumn
During one visit to the temple to make offerings
He met Tan Thi a girl from a poor
farming family Her parents had died young
and she was raised by a nun She was not dazzlingly beautiful
but gentle eyes a smile like soft sunlight When offering
the cup in return
their gazes met
just for a fleeting moment
as if they had known each other from a previous
life Later he married her
Tan Shi asked for neither gold nor jewels
nor did she covet wealth and status
I only wish to serve my mother-in-law
and care for my husband as he reads The
people of the county said the high-ranking official was blessed
with a virtuous wife who brought lasting fortune
That was the fruit of a good seed sown
long ago His life became peaceful from then on
Each morning the smoke from the small house by the stream rose into the air
The sound of the wooden bell mingles with the chirping
of birds In the afternoon the children in the village run into the classroom
reciting aloud the principles of benevolence ritual wisdom and
trust Occasionally
Someone asked "Sir weren't you once betrayed
Why do you
harbor no resentment "
He smiled softly if they hadn't betrayed him perhaps
I'd still be a dreamer
chasing fame in my old village it
was only through pain that I truly awakened
Because of loss comes understanding which is
why today we finally find peace
Then he spoke in a quiet voice
retribution is not about revenge
o remind people of their inherent kindness
Several years later
I heard that a former prisoner Li Yujiao stationed
at the northern frontier was seriously ill
Zhao Yun quietly sent medicine and a letter of问候
The letter contained only
a few lines In this life
I bear her no resentment all things are but fate If
there is another life may we both
have the wisdom not to err again
Ngọc Kiều read the letter tears streaming down her face
clutching it to her chest as her final breath
faded A gentle smile touched her lips
The smile of one who repents
late yet still finds forgiveness
That news spread and Zhao Yunsheng was struck silent
Then he gave a gentle
nod That was it—the bond between him and her was finally severed
That night he chanted sutras through the first three watches of the night
Offering prayers for the soul's peaceful liberation
The following year
winter arrived early blanketing the maple
grove in white snow
He saw Elder Zhao still seated beneath
the small lamp quietly writing a faint smile on
his face his expression serene He penned the final line in the book
The Heart's Own Story
To conquer the world is not as great as to conquer oneself
The flash of hatred's fire only burns briefly
Yet the light of compassion illuminates countless ages
Outside the veranda
a gentle breeze blows the rhythmic tolling of the bell
mingling with the sound of children studying
In the small class by the stream
It was the sound of a new life pure and
clear light as a breath
of bone blossoming from a single good deed amid the trials of human existence
The story of three
individuals—Zhao Yunsheng Cong
Zhongmin and Li Yujiao—is not merely a tragedy
yet a vid verse on cause and effect echoing
through countless generations On the wall of time
Good and evil have never faded
On the relentless current
of life every action every
thought becomes a seed
Sow a seed of the heart and one day it will bloom or bear
fruit depending on the one who sowed it
Whatever you plant you will reap
Wherever you run you can't escape your own
shadow Goodness is like cool water evil
thoughts like fire that dries up the
landscape Someone asked if karma is truly fair
Why do good people still suffer The Buddha replied because their old
karma remains unsettled and their newly planted
seeds of goodness are still immature
The wicked revel today
but their joy is a flower growing on a field of ruin
beautiful indeed yet ready to wither at the first gust of wind
The good person endures hardship
today yet that suffering is
like silent rain nurturing the seeds of blessings to sprout
So that one day it may bloom with
a fragrant fragrance Blessings don't come from begging
but from how we live each day
Righteousness isn't found
in words but in every small
act in how we treat others
when no one is watching
Zhao Yunsheng had never preached
doctrine had never written
scriptures yet his very life
was a wordless endless sutra
When the heart is clouded he keeps his
mind clear When life is full of storms
he remains calm as still water in a tranquil lake
By preserving a pure heart
Even amidst sorrow the
robe remains unstained with
patience preserved even if
life's winds blow against you
I remain steady while you lean to this
day each full moon night illuminates the river's surface
with the light of the water goddess
The people of Hùng Hóa still recount that story
Children sit in a circle
elders respond with quiet reflection incense
smoke twining with the wind
As Zhao Yun Sheng uttered his final words
at the moment of passing all fell
silent save for the sound of wind rustling
through the ginkgo leaves under the stars
Reckoning comes without sword
or blade those who live in error close
the door to their own lives Idle tales hollow laughter
His finger gently tapped the cup
The sound rang out like a temple bell Though
the net of heaven
was sparse nothing could slip through
Goodness begets goodness a
truth that never changes if
you've ever been betrayed
please don't harbor resentment
The greatest cost for a betrayer isn't revenge but
the emptiness of no longer
being able to trust oneself
Just live well keep
your heart upright for karma will take care
of the rest If you find yourself
standing between right and wrong
Remember defeating others is a
matter of one lifetime Defeating oneself is the victory that transcends countless lifetimes
Don't trade your entire life for
darkness over a moment of weakness
A single thought of greed can burn down an entire forest of merit
One thought of compassion
can save countless lives
If you are suffering please do not lose
hope Suffering
is not punishment
Suffering is the baptism of karma Today 's
tears are the water that
nourishes the flowers of future blessings Whenever the heart turns toward goodness
The entire universe silently
moves to support you To help you rise and continue walking
forward on the path of light The Buddha taught:
when the mind is upright the body finds peace
When the heart is calm
fortune flows smoothly When there is light
within the mind darkness in the world will naturally dissolve
The story of Zhao Yunsheng Cong
Zhongmin and Li Yujiao is not merely
the memory of a bygone village but
a mirror reflecting timeless truths
The human heart endures forever A
good person fears
no loss for blessings
will come A deceitful person cannot
last long for karma will arrive
Maintaining kindness knowing how to repent and letting go of
resentment—this is the first step
toward leaving behind suffering
No one travels farther than the one
who knows when to turn back No one is richer than the one who
knows contentment No one is wiser than the one
who preserves a gentle heart in a world gone mad
