Two Woodstown police officers are being credited with helping deliver a baby girl after a frantic father ran into the police department seeking help.
Video shows the father sprinting into the station before returning minutes later to his car on West Avenue with Patrolmen Benjamin Haines and Gabriel Chiarelli back on December 9.

What started as an emergency stop became a life-changing moment for a pair of
Woodstown police officers in South Jersey. Overcoming a language barrier and
relying on their instincts, which did not include medical training, this pair helped
bring a baby into the world on the side of the road. A panicked father runs into
the Woodstown Police Department. Minutes later he returns to his parked car on
West Avenue with patrolman Benjamin Haynes and Gabriel Chiarelli. As we were
running across the street, we called the ambulance. But when the officers get to
the backseat, they saw a woman in active labor. We weren't really expecting that,
especially the baby coming out when we opened the car door. The biggest
challenge, the language barrier. Relying on Google Translate, Haynes and Chiarelli
coached the woman through the contractions and delivered a baby girl.
So we couldn't really say much, but I just told her to breathe and push and
she did and out came the head and I held the head until the rest of it came out.
This was a first for both officers who have been on the force less than two
years, but they acted without hesitation. Then the whole baby came out and I was
just holding it. We got some blankets, put a blanket on the mom and then the
baby on the blanket and then covered it with another blanket just to keep it
warm. A little more than 10 minutes later, medics arrived on scene. I
communicated with the mom a lot with thumbs up. You know, I give her a thumbs
up. She give me one back. That's how I knew she was okay. Didn't have much time
to think. They just reacted. They did everything, everything that they
possibly could have. They did it right, going above and beyond. But both would
say it's part of the job. We didn't have much of a choice. We just had to do it.
We had to do and we're just glad everything worked out. This is what we
signed up to do. We signed up to help people on a time of need, and that was
she was definitely in a time of need there.
Now they're both two of the department's newest officers, and the
chief says that he's been with the department since 2000 and five, and this
is the first time that they've had to deliver babies, especially on the side
of the road. If you know a first responder who has gone above and beyond
while on the call duty, be sure to let us know and to six abc dot com slash
heroes.
