Now to the East Bay's 14th congressional
district race between Melissa Hernandez and
Aisha Wahab. Wahab won a special election against Hernandez
to serve out the remainder of
Congressman Eric Swalwell's term after he resigned
because of sexual assault allegations. Right now,
the vote results show Wahab with 57 percent of the vote,
Melissa Hernandez with 43 percent.
Ayesha Wahab's campaign focused on rejecting corporate influence,
expanding affordable
housing, and investing in public safety.
Now, some of her endorsements include Governor Gavin
Newsom and Senator Bernie Sanders.
She spoke at her election night party in Hayward last night,
where she reaffirmed her commitment to serving
and supporting working class Americans.
People want to make sure that, again, their family is taken care of,
their elders are taken care of, their children are taken care of.
And we all want peace and security and prosperity and opportunity.
And that is what we work for.
Now, prior to serving in Congress,
Wahab became the first Afghan-American woman elected to U.S.
public office, serving on the Hayward City Council
from 2018 to 2022. She was elected
as a state senator in 2022
and then served until her election to Congress in August.
Now, Pam, the platform of Melissa Hernandez focused
on issues that include access to child
care, A.I. regulation and reining in ICE.
Her endorsements include Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren
Dublin Mayor Sherry Hugh.
She held her watch party last night in Dublin. That's where she
used to be the mayor. We've delivered so much as you've seen Dublin,
one of the fastest growing
cities for many years with regards to housing,
bringing in some great businesses, bringing so
many rich cultures coming in.
And so I'm blessed to be able to have been the mayor of Dublin.
Now, after serving as the mayor of Dublin,
Hernandez became the board director of BART.
And we have at this point Aisha Wahab leading Hernandez by about
18 points, a little less than half of the votes have been counted.
Well, Democrats.
