The family of 18-year-old Morgan McCaffery has aimed a spotlight on domestic violence, educating teens in the aftermath of her tragic passing.
This is their story: https://6abc.com/20011600/?utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=youtube
For me this is really a very sad tragic story
to have to share with all of you because it was the
life of my daughter. My daughter Morgan was a typical teenager.
She had just graduated high
school. She wanted to become a dental hygienist.
She did a lot of volunteer work and she was
always just willing to help.
Why do people find it so hard to ask for help?
Morgan was in a relationship for a year.
It became toxic and it did become an abusive relationship.
She ended the relationship, but the abuse didn't stop.
Morgan agreed to meet him one day.
He stabbed her multiple times
and took her life that morning, July 2020.
We started Morgan's Light to shine light
on this topic that's just not talked about.
We want to educate young adults and teens.
What are the warning signs, the red flags?
Most importantly, that they need to create a safety plan.
Right now we're at Mast Charter School right here
in Northeast Philadelphia.
This is the third time that I'm here
and we're talking to the students about this topic,
about the warning signs.
If you say yes because you're scared, that's not consent.
I learned there are multiple types of abuse,
not just one, because usually when you think of abuse,
you just think of physical, but usually people in high school, like,
they just dismiss stuff like this, and they don't think about it.
Even if I think, oh, it's not major, like,
no matter what it is, I should find a person to talk to,
and it's a good thing that they're sharing her story.
You never, ever, ever have to face situations alone.
There are resources out there that are so important for our students.
If you want us to come on out to your school or organization,
if you want to get involved or help,
please visit our website morganslight.org.
It is my hope that we continue to shine Morgan's light
so no family ever has to be in the position that we're in.
