Well, an outpouring of support and remembrance tonight for Matthew Gaudreau in his hometown.
He and his brother, Johnny, were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver back in 2024
while riding their bikes. Matthew, who was a hockey coach as well as a husband and father,
received a special award tonight posthumously.
And Action News reporter Brianna Smith has the story from Carnies Point, New Jersey.
A standing ovation for former hockey player Matthew Gaudreau,
now the newest member of the Salem County Sports Hall of Fame.
We're honored that we're here and he's earned it.
Matty, another accomplishment under your belt.
It is such a privilege to stand here tonight and celebrate the remarkable career you had.
Gaudreau's widow, Madeline, says she proudly cheered him on through his hockey journey.
Watching you do what you love has been one of the greatest experiences of my life.
Matthew played at Gloucester Catholic High School and Boston College
before turning professional and playing for minor league teams.
There's nothing short of earned. He's amazing. He's a great hockey player.
I was fortunate to be one of his teammates for a little bit.
Matthew and his brother, Johnny, lost their lives in 2024
when they were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver.
On Thursday, a judge denied an appeal to have the defendant's statements to police removed from trial.
And I will always be the one to brag about him and for him.
Loved ones remain focused on keeping the brother's memory alive
as they both share a spot in the Hall of Fame.
I'm really proud of my two sons and I miss them.
Matty, this is a legacy to leave behind. One that goes far beyond the ice.
To everyone who played with him, coached him, or cheered him on,
thank you for being part of his story.
And to the Hall of Fame, thank you for ensuring that story will live on for years to come.
Family and friends will continue to honor Matthew and Johnny in various ways.
One that's near and dear to their heart is the annual Goodrove 5K.
It's scheduled for May at Washington Lake Park.
