Pinwheeled Courtyards and Passive Design | A House on Lake Nagambie

This lakeside house on Lake Nagambie explores how spatial organisation can overcome environmental constraints while strengthening the relationship between architecture and landscape. Facing south toward the water—an unfavourable orientation for solar access in the southern hemisphere—the project employs courtyards and material performance as primary design tools.

Three glazed courtyards are arranged in a pinwheel configuration around a central dining room, enabling multiple visual connections to the lake and drawing natural light deep into the plan. This configuration allows winter sun to warm the concrete slab while encouraging cooling breezes to pass through the house during warmer months, establishing a passive, low-energy approach to comfort.

The architectural language is grounded in texture and pattern. Pale masonry blockwork defines the lower level, with smooth external finishes and honed internal surfaces lending a muted, tactile quality. Hit-and-miss block walls introduce porosity, while fine vertical metal blades shade and screen the upper level, visually dissolving the house into its treed lakeside context.

Through a disciplined spatial and material strategy, the house demonstrates how climate-responsive design can coexist with strong formal clarity and a relaxed lakeside lifestyle.
