You've probably noticed that native German speakers don't talk the same way in everyday life as they do in German class textbooks
We use many colloquial expressions Today I'm going to introduce you to nine of them Have fun
He is determined to become a professional footballer That's why he trains for several hours every day
"By any means necessary" means doing something with all one's might at any cost or absolutely
He will definitely become a professional footballer He is doing everything for it no matter what the consequences are
This expression can sometimes have a slightly different meaning Here for example
My brother is working like crazy because he really wants to make a career
This expression here means more like as long or as intensively as possible
He works a lot and for long hours because he wants to be successful in his job
The movie starts in ten minutes Hurry up or we'll be late
To step up means to move faster drive faster or also to hurry up
Here in the example we might be in the car and I say hey drive a bit faster or we'll be late for the movie
Another example I told the tradesman to step up his pace or the kitchen would never get finished
The craftsman should hurry Or the waiter is slow today he could really use a boost
The waiter should work a bit faster in my opinion
I just don't understand how to solve this task Can you explain it to me
Checking something is slang for understanding or grasping something
In English "to check" means something like to check or verify This meaning also exists in German but "checken" has other meanings as well like here
I didn't understand the task Could you please explain it to me
Another example I only realized after ten minutes that I was in the wrong bus
I was sitting in the bus for five minutes before I realized or understood that I was in the wrong bus
He drove in the wrong direction
Next we'll look at a slightly more vulgar expression
When the boss called me into his office and gave me that angry look I was really scared I thought I was going to get fired
When someone's back is against the wall suddenly someone is very scared
In one situation everything is still okay but then something suddenly happens and you think oh damn what's going on now
Here is another example
Yesterday I received an email from my doctor It said that I should contact him as soon as possible regarding my blood test results
That really got to me In the end the results weren't that bad I just have a severe iron deficiency
I was really scared because of this urgent email from my doctor that I might have a serious illness
The word " arsch" is an informal term for the buttocks the body part you sit on
And this word can often be heard in the somewhat rougher German colloquial language
As an insult for example or in expressions like this one
What is ground ice
When it is very cold a layer of ice forms on the bottom of lakes
And when it gets warmer this ice layer melts and emerges
This can be quite loud
In this expression these loud noises are compared to the sounds the stomach makes when someone has stomach pain
Stomachaches are common when you're afraid
If you like this video don't forget to give it a thumbs up
This really helps me

Now let's go we're already five minutes late
Now it is a common expression in German colloquial language
It's often said when trying to encourage someone to finally do something or finally start doing something
Here in the example
I say now we finally have to go or start
moving We are already late Or imagine it is Monday afternoon
You're on lunch break right now and should have already started working ten minutes ago
You don't feel like it but then you motivate yourselves to finally get up and get back to work
That would be a typical situation to say now back to work
Now it is also said that when something has been tried several times without success and is then tried once more
An example
I try five times to throw a basketball into the hoop and it doesn't work
On the next attempt I focus properly and say this time
Also so now I manage it
Now I will try it again properly
Let's look at another expression with "ass " namely to draw the ass card
While everyone has time off this weekend I have to work
I've drawn the short straw again
When you draw the short straw you're unlucky or you're disadvantaged or you have to take on a particularly unpleasant task
Here in this example I have the disadvantage that I have to work
Everyone else has time off
Our teacher happened to pick a student who had to read his homework aloud
Yeah and who drew the short straw
Of course
Also I had to take on this unpleasant task and everyone else was lucky
Perhaps you are wondering where this expression comes from
What is a "butt card"
Probably the origin of this expression is in football
In the past football referees carried the red card in their pocket
The red card is the worst punishment in soccer
That was basically the ass card
These expressions with "ass" are as mentioned a bit crude
They should only be used in very informal situations for example when speaking with friends

If you just go through the motions with all your tasks you'll soon lose your job
The adjective "larifari" means superficial careless or not careful
If you do something without trying and without making any effort then you're just going through the motions
Another example is that he only does his homework half-heartedly
He doesn't make any effort with his homework
There is also the word "Larifari" as a noun
Then it means nonsense
What did the boss say in the meeting today
Oh just some nonsense about the company's future
Nothing interesting
The boss didn't really say anything important or useful
Be careful it's not very nice to say someone is just talking nonsense
My boss criticized me in front of all the colleagues
I won't let that slide
The idiom "something not sit oneself" means that one
does not simply accept an accusation criticism or insult
but resists it
In this example it means that I do not simply accept the criticism
I plan to respond to it and talk to my boss about it
Or my brother claims he is the better table tennis player
I won't let that stand
There's a duel tomorrow
It's also about not simply accepting the brother's claim
They want to prove that the claim is not true
