Welcome back. Today I thought I'd take you through Robin's solo version of October Song.
And my source for this lesson is a YouTube clip posted by Austrian Heart.
And as with so many of his clips, it's a really good example of the way Robin plays this song.
He always chooses particularly fine versions of things to put on YouTube.
So it's in C, G, C, G, C, D. There's no capo used in this lesson.
Although it's played in this tuning, the same chords will work just as well in standard tuning.
The clip unfortunately misses a little bit of the first verse.
So I'm going to start with the second verse and do a complete second verse.
And I'll take you through Robin's guitar playing as well.
Because it's one of the most interesting parts anyway.
The second verse goes...
So it goes...
It's a G minor, so it's Violet 7 with your finger on the 8th fret of the top string.
Takes it down to an F, so that's Violet 5 with your finger on the 7th fret of the top string.
And take it down to a C chord, so you're just playing your finger on the top string.
Then there's a little riff that comes in there.
So you're playing the 4th string, then you're playing top, 2nd, 3rd.
Then go down to a D minor, so that's Vine on 2.
Spring on top, spring on 3.
Then go down to a C, which is just 2 on top strings.
Chord, which is 0202 on the middle strings.
Then pick up the melody.
That's just 2, open 2.
Then you just slide your finger upwards on the 2nd fret of the 4th string, up to the 4th fret.
You're putting your finger on the 5th fret of the 5th string.
And that gives you a C chord for dying.
So they leave with joy is...
Then bass string twice.
They leave with is 4 on the bass string.
And joy is a F chord, so you're on the 5th fret, across the bottom 3 strings.
Back to a C chord, which is 0402.
Then place the melody again.
So that's 4, 5 on the 5th string.
Let's go to a G chord, which is playing 2 on the 2nd fret of the 4th string, and the 5th string as well.
Repeat that.
Shadows is 0402.
Go to a C chord.
So the first part of it is F chord.
And you want to hit the 5th, 4th and 3rd frets.
Then hit the same strings, but just now play a C chord, which is 4, 5, 4 and 0.
Then hold.
You're playing the bottom 3 strings in 050.
The morning...
Go to a G chord, 02.
It's a C chord.
That just opens the 4th string twice.
That's 4.
C is a bar note.
It's an F chord.
So you're a bar note at the 5th.
So within my mind is open 3rd, 5, 4 on the 4th string.
C chord.
Go back, move your finger down 1 to 4.
It's a G chord, 02.
To a C.
And the break that Robin does is based around the melody.
So it's 2, 5, 2, 4, 5.
That again isn't his.
It's a 9th fret.
So I'm playing this 10 and 9.
That twice.
Then move it down to 7 and 9.
Then down to 4 and 5.
It goes down to the 2nd fret of the 5th string.
So that's 2, 2, 0, 4, 4.
C chord.
4, 5.
And I think that extract brings out a lot of the things that Robin's doing when he plays it as a solo version these days in the C, G, C, G, C, B tuning.
It lends itself to playing the melody notes when you're singing.
Then kind of put these chord stabs in.
And Robin has come up with some really good voicings as well.
At the beginning of it.
So I hope that's been helpful.
And if it has been helpful and you've enjoyed it, then please do tip the thumbs upside.
