When Space Is Limited, Design Grows Vertical | Tree Island House

Tree Island House, designed by Carter Williamson Architects and completed in 2022 in Alexandria, Australia, is a narrow urban family home that transforms site constraints into a spatial advantage through vertical design. Organized around a central double-height void and illuminated by a continuous skylight, the house maximizes natural light, ventilation, and visual openness despite its limited width. A standout feature is the integration of a living fig tree within the kitchen island, reinforcing a strong connection between interior spaces and nature. Through a refined palette of concrete, stone, and timber, the project demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can create calm, light-filled, and nature-connected living environments in dense urban contexts.
