We're at 25 yards today. I'm going to be talking about the difference just when having a pin gap.
So I'll shoot with my top pin, shoot between my pins, and shoot with my second pin just to kind
of show the drops and the difference why it's critical to make sure especially at your further
distances at you know 35, 45, 55 to make sure that you understand pin gapping, understand how to shoot
because it will change as you go to a slower bow. It'll make it even more critical so that's why I
like to keep with an arrow weight that has a good speed because it's more forgiving at different
distances. My pin gaps are smaller so let's take a look at start shooting. I'll shoot three arrows
with my top pin at 25 yards. We'll go down there take a look pull. We'll use the shoot through the
gap which should be on with three arrows and then with my second pin just to kind of see where the
difference that if you're in a hunting situation didn't have a chance to range whatever that would
look like. All right so first group at 20 yards let's go take a look at it. Okay so first group
we're using that top pin at 25 yards. First shot broke a little bit low. This one broke a little
high. This one felt pretty good so I'm going to say we're kind of we're probably right here
with that top pin so about a inch and a half low just at 20 to 25 yards so as you back out to 30
or 35 I'm shooting with that 30 yard pin it's going to be even further low.
All right group two I'll use my pin gap so should be spot on. All right just shot group
two. Now when I do pin gap especially in the middle yardages like 25 35 I like to split my
pin so I'm going to basically stare right through the middle of my pins. This helps me now if I'm
shooting something like 28 I may just put that top or that second pin my 30 yard pin just a
little bit low or if it's like 23 putting my top pin my 20 yard pin just a little bit high.
So learning that but between the pins I found good luck shooting just staring right through
the middle. Let's go take a look at that group. All right so we have group two first one good
second one a little bit high but it's still in the white third one good so splitting the pin
pretty solid 20 yards keeping it keeping it pretty close to the center on the white. Let's
go shoot our third group with the 30 yard pin. With our 30 yard pin at 25 yards should be hitting a
high so we'll shoot this group see how high we're hitting. Okay so we are pretty dang high consistently
with using our 30 yard pin at 25 yards so we can see first arrow what are we two and a half three
inches same thing here same thing here so 30 yards 30 yard pin at 25 yards makes a big difference.
Okay so we just finished shooting our three groups what to take away from this we shot with our top
pin 20 yard pin at 25 pin gap at 25 and 30 at 25 and there's about a five inch spread of difference
between the two so what should we consider when we go out into the woods you want something with
some good speed because even with a pretty solid setup this is shooting 285 feet per second with a
435 grain arrow 28 and a half inch draw length at 70 pounds very very easy to achieve for most
people pretty common specs and we're still seeing that five inch of difference so if you don't
range properly or guess properly that could be a difference between killing or wounding an animal
so when you're out in the field just make sure you take the time to understand because that's at 25
yards as you get to 35 45 55 there's even further distances out there that brace is only going to
increase that drop is going to increase so another thing heavy arrows so they may be more forgiving
for breaking through shoulders but that drop is going to increase with the heavy arrow so
is that worth it is the forgiveness of maybe unable to break through the bone and maybe getting
you know an inch more penetration worth now that you're having a an eight inch drop from 20 to 30
yards is that worth it or is that can be considered less forgiving to me i think so i'd rather have a
good speed with a hard hitting arrow that i know is going to break through some of the softer parts
of the shoulder on a whitetail mule deer now some of those hard hard knuckled bones are going to be
hard to break through but i kind of stay away from that i know i've got plenty of space to not have
to get up in that but i've also got enough speed to minimize their reaction time to the arrow and
also if i don't have the exact yardage i'm still good so especially for whitetail you can just see
that's pretty easy to see 20 to 30 yards that 10 yard difference we're looking about a five six inch
thread and like i said as you go further especially once you get out to 70 yards that's why a roverside
is important if you're going out on big elk hunts mule deer hunts we want to put that yardage exactly
where you want it because at 70 yards if you're two yards off that can make you know that could
make that much difference that's like i said is the difference between getting that animal or not
so if you range that animal for 75 and you set it to 73 you could you could be off that's why i like
to run four pins i've got 20 30 40 50 my gap between 50 and 60 starts to get pretty big so
it's hard for me to pin gap shoot that i've got my range that i'll put it on exactly past that
distance so consider that when you do go out into the hunting woods to make sure you practice pin
gapping make sure that you're either a good yardage judger you've taken the time to understand how far
if you're white tail hunting things in your in your setup are you know you've got a feeder how
far is that feeder is there a tree that you know what's the maximum radius that you want to shoot
in so consider that range that understand that so when an animal does come in you know okay that's
25 yards i've got a pin gap because that could be the difference in getting that animal or not
