Video Summary
AI GeneratedA hunter documents a challenging journey into grizzly country to pursue elk and deer. After transitioning from a base camp to the backcountry, he faces steep learning curves regarding wind patterns and distance estimation. Despite locating a large herd and a 6-point bull, the trip concludes with missed shots and a reflective recovery meal with companions.
He taught me how to fish; my uncle taught me how to drink.
Well, I went to California and I got myself a band.
And we played in all the bars in all the southern lands.
We played all night and drank for free, for my boys and me.
If you watched the last film, it was me and my girlfriend Savannah killing bears.
And then I was talking about the hunt I was supposed to be going on before I ended up going after bears.
And now, I'm here. Set up camp, an awesome wall tent camp set up.
And I'm absolutely thrilled to be here. I've been scouting this area all summer long.
I think I spent nearly 10 to 12 days.
I saw a lot of good bulls, a really nice buck.
And I'm just excited to get back in here.
It's extremely thick grizzly country.
As you can see, I have the right weapon, the one almost everyone recommended to me.
That hunts super thick, nasty grizzly country.
Can't mess around with them, so they better not mess with me because I've got this bad boy.
It's a 12-gauge shotgun, somewhat of a short-range Mossberg.
And it's loaded with buckshot, so the bears had better not mess around with me.
Got the prime bow, my first bow hunt of the year.
And I'm excited. It's almost September 10th—I think September 8th or something around there.
And I'm just heading up to where I've been glassing all summer.
There are definitely been people in here, but that's okay.
It doesn't seem like anyone's here right now.
That's a very good sign.
That bad boy has like, I don't even know, 4,000 photos.
And then the trail right behind me is absolutely full of deer and elk signs.
So I'm going to grab the SD card, go up and over this little knob, and start checking it while I'm glassing.
That trail camera had a decent amount of stuff on it.
It did have a new buck that I would definitely shoot, especially with a bow.
Just a great, nice 4-point score, especially for this area.
That's a plus. He came in probably two weeks ago, though, so who knows where he could be right now.
And then a few nice 6-point bulls I'd had before came in.
But honestly, nothing in the past two weeks, like, September-wise, so that kind of sucks.
But that's just right back over there.
And it's kind of in a spot that I don't even think elk would want to go there.
unless they're randomly traveling through.
We can't take back the things we said.
So we watch it pass in separate beds
We're changing, changing
Too little love, much pride
You won't give in, and neither will children.
Ain't it just like you, woman
Isn't it just like a man?
Chasing a rainbow, looking for love
When it's right in the palm
Feet on the floor, holding my head
Sitting alone on the edge of the bed
I've been thinking, thinking
Trying to find where we just turned around
You were gone, it's over
Ain't it just like you, woman
Ain't it just like a man
Chasing a rainbow, looking for love
When it's right in the palm
Ain't it just like you, woman
Isn't it just like a man?
Chasing a rainbow
Well, I've already been seeing a whole bunch of bulls.
A lot of raghorns so far
And then I heard a pretty decent bugle.
That I was trying to go to
And they just kind of shut up now
I haven't really even been calling, just trying to be listening.
So now I'm going to wrap around this face
And go to where I was yesterday
This bull was really performing exceptionally well.
So, without wasting any time
Cruising over here
Trying to get set up on him beforehand
It's a little too late.
Also saw a few little bulls
Above him, so
There are bulls in here; hopefully, I can call one in.
For the most part
Big buck hunting
You just have to hike to a glass knob and be patient.
You have to be freaking going, non-stop, when elk hunting
Ended up working my way up
That little bottom, up that top
There's a nice little bench.
And I just kept telling myself, at least get there.
Because all the bulls just kind of shut up
I said at least get to that bench.
And then let out some cow calls
And maybe have a bull come in
And that's exactly what happened
They called in a little
I think it was around 4 or 5 points.
Which I was almost going to shoot if it had come in
But the wind ended up switching.
That's strange because, as you can tell
It's shaded right there.
I figured the thermals are going to keep descending.
But they ended up switching.
He blew out of there, probably around 100 yards.
But that's exciting
Why am I back at camp, you may be wondering
Well, change of plans
Have base camp, obviously
But I did bring all my backcountry gear.
Like my tent, sleeping bag, and pad
And I'm heading back there tomorrow
I ended up shooting three bucks.
That potentially everyone are shooters
And you know me, if you know me
I love me a leash.
Way more than elk
So it was an unreal day for elk hunting.
Got close to that bull
And then I swear I saw 15 bulls
They aren't really talking much right now.
So I don't feel too guilty
Leaving the elk to go and chase a deer
But we got the pack absolutely packed to the brim
And I'm packing my own water
Because I'm not sure where to get water
And I forgot my filter
That's super fun
But either way, it's going to be about four miles deep.
All I have to do is hike this ridgeline.
In the morning
And I'll probably start not crazy early
Just because I might have heard some bugles on the way
But I also did notice a nice 5-point area in this region.
But yeah, as I said, 3 stud bucks found
And man, I love
I love me some Eelies
So I'm excited to go backpacking for
It's probably only going to be a night.
But maybe 2 nights
And see if I can't kill one of them
Or just learn more about the area
And find out if I need to come back
And then go back in
Here we go
To the backcountry
Freaking pack is definitely
Pretty dang heavy
I got a little bit of a late start.
Camp is set up
Got a little sleeping pad
Sleeping bag
I had to put on my rain jacket
And a rain cover for my pack
Under my sleeping pad
Because I didn't bring a floor for this tent
Which kind of sucks
Because this is kind of pretty nasty
Ground to sleep on
In terms of popping
And also a shout-out to the guy I just met
I honestly don't remember his name.
But dude absolutely kills it
And I love it because there are so many people out there
That you just have no idea
How much work would they be putting in?
I think he's already hiked about 10 to 15 miles today.
And it's not even ten o'clock
It's probably 11 now.
Yeah, 11 right now
And he's like, "Yeah, I'll probably end up going another 25 miles."
What the heck
And then there are some of us hunters complaining about 5-mile hikes
So stupid
But either way, we've got camp dialed in.
And the funny thing is
Just right on the other side of this ridge line
That's where I'm going to set up and glass for those bucks.
And maybe some bowls
Good luck to you.
Let's get everything ready and go up there
I ended up getting glassed up
I think I saw two of the bucks.
That I am obviously in here for
And both of the ones I saw
Or at least the one for sure
It's just a little too small.
I feel like
I could find something bigger on my rut hunt
Which comes later in the fall?
So
If that's the biggest buck then
It is what it is
There's still a lot of countryside.
That I might be able to find some new bucks in, though
That's pretty much what I'm looking forward to.
And then I also saw
A small 5-point bull elk
Across the canyons
The same one that I saw yesterday
So
That's pretty cool
About having another breakfast meal for us
I'll tell you what
It's starting to
Add up
All the crappy stuff
I'm feeding my gut
That's for sure, but
Pretty much everything you can do during hunting season
Especially grinding so much
This is one of those evenings
And just days that
You really just need to sit back
And thank God for life
That he gave you
Unbelievable evening
And I just called in as well
A spike, as you saw
To 40 yards
I wish it were a 6-point.
That was so stupid.
But man, I'm just
Taking it in
There have been a few bugles.
But honestly, nothing crazy
It kind of seems like
The elk are not in full rutting mode right now.
At least around this area
So
It's been fun though
Got camped just right on the back side of this
Hopefully I don't
I'm freezing my butt off.
And
Maybe go after some elk or something in the morning
Because I'm going to stay here
And then I'm actually meeting up with my buddies
Well, I've never met them before.
So I'm meeting up with them.
And we're going to hunt for the next few days
In this spot
So
See you in a bit
Goodbye
I've been so numb for so many years
I'm thinking about her every day now
On my mind a tick of the way
Are you...
Made it into bed
And as you saw
Right before it got too dark to glass
I left the glass up a pretty sweet six-point.
A bull with a somewhat youthful appearance
But really, really pretty genetics
So obviously I'm praying that
Maybe I can find him tomorrow in a good spot
And hopefully he's talking
Because he wasn't saying a word at all
And I don't know how to hunt elk.
If you can't see him or hear him
So I'm mostly hoping the morning goes well
And then I also heard a bugle right from camp.
So that was a pretty successful evening.
Came in here for the money
But there seem to be a lot of elk in here.
So yeah, let's go to bed now
We have the bull located.
I just need to get down quickly.
Man, what a close call
I worked really hard
To try to get down in front of these
This big six-point
Or a nice six-point with this herd of cows
The one I saw last night
And
The wind was just blowing straight down this ravine.
Like normal
Downhill thermals
So the only way forward was through this opening.
And cruise all the way down
And I ended up overshooting it
And went a little too far below them
Because my method was
To let out a few cow calls when I'm really close to them
Like, don't make any noise
And then when I'm really close to them, let out a few cow calls.
And see if he maybe thinks it's
One of his cows that is missing
And then comes and checks it out
And that's exactly what he was doing.
But I was just too far down the draw
So I'm sure he just looked down and was like
No, that's like a hundred more yards I have to go
So I ended up creeping even closer.
I bet
Within eighty to a hundred yards of him
I didn't see him, I just heard him.
Walking and bugling and all that stuff
And then I come and find his tracks
And he was freaking close, man
But as I said, I'm a beginner.
I'm a beginner when it comes to elk hunting.
I mean, I've hunted elk a lot, but
I just haven't hunted them enough during the rut
To figure out what to do
And when to do it
Oh, we got an update.
Here with the homies
Say your names
I'm Trenton, I'm Dylan.
There you go, now you've met them.
Well, we ended up changing places.
A completely different location within the unit
Something like this cool burn country that we're just gonna try out
So we've got three of us cruising up this trail
And just got a beep on this other side
And glass for this evening
And then see if we spot some elk
And if we do
Then we'll obviously be back in the morning.
But hopefully we kill tonight
Well, we literally just made it to the top
And already spotted some cows
And there's a nice six-point one in there
So hopefully we get to play tonight
We're all kind of thinking
We wish we had brought
Our camp like a backcountry camp
Type of stuff
So we could go backpacking in here
But either way, I think we're going to get to play tonight.
And if not, we'll probably just stay up here.
And freeze all night
It's going to be worth it.
There's a nice six-point probably around
300 I just kind of see one side of him
Right now in the thick timber
He looks like he's been with someone.
He probably has about 30 cows with him.
And then there's another little raghorn.
To the left of them
So who knows, maybe there are a few other bulls
Surrounding him, which I'm sure there is somewhere
But these bulls are absolutely fired up.
So Dylan and Trent
Going there
If I'm being honest, my legs are absolutely
Numb and dead
And Dylan needs a bull.
He deserves one.
So he dropped down into
I'm just staying.
My eyes on the glass
Can't update them or anything because there's no service.
But either way, I'll be able to watch it unfold.
And pretty much the way this herd is
There are probably 30 cows.
And 5 different bulls
And they're kind of heading down this drainage
So they're trying to go in front of them
And then just kind of wait it out
Maybe let out some cow calls
And see if the big bull gets pissed off and all that stuff
So I'm just gonna watch it from up here
Freaking way down there
We've been swinging
And missing
It isn't broken yet
But damn, need it fixed
It's been a while.
Since your kiss felt like
Kissing
It's just different.
We've been
Talking about forever
Since we've been together
Something about a ring
Makes you think we're better off without
All of this, yet we're caught
In a difficult situation with no good options
Red wine and mistakes
Tears rolling down your face
When I walked out that door
That's when I snapped
Midnight in Austin
Damn, I'm exhausted.
What the hell is all this for?
Is this where it ends?
Or it breaks
Between a rock and a hard place
I'd put in some effort
So I'd rather go out
For better weather
Made the top bulls nervous
Because it kind of went into
Two different groups
The big 6 points with obviously
Like 30 cows, so much fun to watch
And then there are 5 other little bulls
And they kind of got in between it
But I'm fairly sure the top bulls smell them.
And they just kind of pulled away
Too far when they started letting out
Some cow calls
That's unfortunate because
We just finished grinding.
I mean, this morning I was packed in
Five miles and I went on a bull
And then all of a sudden we're in a completely different way
Part of the unit
Hiked in approximately 3.5 miles
And now they have to go
Back up to me, which is going to be
One and a half miles
So we've got a long night ahead of us.
But that was fun; at least we know there are some bulls around.
And I don't know what's going to happen
In the next few days
Well, that was quite a change.
Of events so
They ended up coming up as you saw.
I got some video of them close to those elk
And then while we were kind of just
Lying a little bit
Probably most likely going to head back
To the trucks at that point
I ended up looking over
And probably 300 to 400 yards away
On the same face as
Kind of where we were glassing on
Well, across the canyon but
Anyway, I saw a nice six-point
I was like, what the hell? There's an elk right there.
So we took down a nice bull
And as you saw, I missed it twice.
That was fun, but either way
I got the chance, and that's fun.
But I think I misranged; I'm assuming.
Because I kind of ranged
The two logs that were
On the left and right sides
Of that bull
And the bull said exactly 60 yards.
And man, I felt
So confident pulling back
Slowly closed the trigger
And I missed
Hit low, so I'm assuming he was probably
65 turning 70
So I'm just glad I missed it.
And then the second shot
Yeah, that's funny—I got two shots.
Pretty embarrassing, but we got another shot.
And then I don't know how far he was
I guessed him for 60 again, and he was probably
Nearly 70 and I
Yeah, I missed it, but the best thing I learned
Is to always range
Because I probably had 5 seconds
To be able to take aim at him before I ended up firing the first shot
That could have been a game changer.
Right there but
The more you know and
Now we're
About 3 miles in
Hiking out in the dark
Hopefully we get back out tomorrow
Who knows it's supposed to be super windy
So we'll have to try to figure something out
Alright, what do you have over here?
We got some brisket
We got some freaking
Potato salad
We're going to be eating well.
We got some corn.
Some pulled pork
And dogs
Dogs
He just got married, that's why there's so much good stuff.
That's the one we're waiting for.
Check that out
That'll cure my sadness from missing you.
