The Real Process Behind Furniture Grade Wood Truck Beds | Custom 1967 C10
Jason and Luis walk through the complete process of finishing custom wood bed panels for a 1967 C10. This isn't your standard clear coat job - watch the real multi-step process that goes into creating furniture-grade wood beds that last.
Starting with raw poplar panels cut to fit around the wheel tubs, they sand down to 220 grit before applying custom-mixed stain to control the wood's natural marbling. Then comes the sealer coat to lock everything in and smooth out the grain. After sanding that down, Jason mixes a custom glaze in the paint room to add depth and antique the edges, matching it to the truck's brown leather interior while going slightly darker for visual balance.
Luis has been finishing wood beds with Jason for years and handles most of the prep and application work. The process includes staining all six sides of every board to seal against moisture, multiple rounds of sanding between coats, custom glaze application to bring out golden tones in the wood, and finishing with two coats of automotive clear for UV protection.
WHY THIS PROCESS MATTERS:
Most DIY wood beds fail because people skip steps or don't seal properly. The six-sided sealing prevents moisture from wicking through end grains, which is what kills truck bed wood. The custom glaze brings out the golden tones while adding character at the edges. Automotive clear instead of standard furniture finish means this bed can handle shows and weather without breaking down.
Jason explains maintenance too - don't hose down your bed, blow out standing water, keep it dry. Do it right and you'll get five to six years before needing a light refinish, which is just sand, reglaze, and reclear.
