Dam Thuy Trieu House | A Sustainable Hilltop Retreat in Central Vietnam

Located west of Dam Thuy Trieu, in Cam Ranh – South Central Vietnam, the Mango Garden House stands on a 2-hectare site surrounded by shrimp farms and an aging mango grove.
This unique landscape, once lush and fertile, has suffered from desertification, salinization, and urban encroachment — leaving the traditional mango trees struggling to survive.

Perched on a rocky hillside overlooking vast fields and the horizon, the residence was conceived as an architectural response to the changing climate, merging sustainable design and local wisdom to revive the land and its ecosystem.

🌿 Design Concept
The project consists of two stacked volumes, following the natural slope of the terrain.
A stone road leads from the entrance to the main terrace, where the panoramic view unfolds — a cinematic dialogue between land, water, and sky.

Drawing from Vietnamese traditional architecture, the design integrates:
A large southern porch and wide terrace for ventilation and shade.
Thick stone walls that insulate from western heat and harmonize with the rocky landscape.
3.2-meter-high glass doors that open fully, blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors.
The roof, pool, and courtyards follow the geometric lines of the shrimp farms below, creating a striking visual rhythm.

💧 Water and Ecology
Water management lies at the heart of the design:
Rainwater retention replaces a green roof, cooling the home through roof-top water circulation.
Large underground tanks collect rainwater for domestic use.
Expanded reservoirs store irrigation water, enabling the revival of the mango garden during the dry months.

Through these strategies, the house doesn’t just occupy the land — it repairs and sustains it.

🏠 Summary
The Mango Garden House embodies a quiet resilience:
a hilltop home shaped by stone, water, and time — reconnecting a family, a landscape, and an architectural tradition.
