The Comica BoomX-D radio mic which we use when shooting port videos and ship tours for Doris Visits, has an annoying fault. It is a weakness, and we show you how to repair it easily and cheaply with no cost thanks to an ex-BBC engineer.

We now use a Comica BoomX-D wireless microphone when filming Doris Visits. The shell design leaves a gap the plug can push back into. Taivo fills the gap, and it works. Then the Comica is demonstrated in action again, as it was at the front, but this time in Split.
All films since about 2021 have been shot with this microphone. Previous films used a Sennheiser system. #Comica#radio#Microphone
A lot of people ask about the sound equipment we use when we're filming Doris Visits.
Well we use a version of a radio mic. This is actually a Bluetooth mic which is connected to
a transmitter. It transmits to a receiver which plugs into the mobile phone. We've been having
some problems with it but the boys are going to fix it. Before I hand you over to Tyvo,
our ex-BBC engineer, please don't forget to subscribe to Doris Visits.
So I'm with my friend Tyvo who was a BBC engineer for 25 years and he loves mending things.
The receiver has to plug into the standard socket, the only way in to an iPhone. One of the problems
is that the little socket in the phone fills up with pocket fluff which you can dig out and clean.
Not with anything metal like a paper clip because that'll just short the battery out
but maybe a wooden toothpick or a small plastic toothpick. Dig out the fluff, keep that clean
and things will plug in easier. But this isn't the problem. The problem here is
that the receiver is broken. I bet your house is full of things for mending.
That's the trouble of I haven't mended them.
The trouble with a lot of these things is that you know you split it and then you rip out a
load of critical wires. The plug bit is just pushing into the plastic rather than
going into the phone. So the first thing we're going to try is glue, the brand new
UV glue and of course Tyvo's got it. It's full extension now isn't it? Yes, full extension.
Okay. We're now going to go down both sides. It's really easy to knock it back in again.
Yeah, well that's what I'm trying to avoid. It needs the UV to harden it.
Dentists always wear a protective mask to stop the UV damaging their eyes.
The one that dentists use probably costs thousands of pounds. Yeah, well I think originally it did
because it was patent protected, you know, very seriously patent protected. Yeah, whereas now
on eBay. I would recommend have a look at their promo on YouTube.
Alison is bringing us coffee while we're working which is terrific.
I don't normally get this, you know. I've been mending something by myself with my toolbox,
holding my camera all by myself. This is like I've been promoted.
The trouble is I'm interested in too many things. Yeah, you can never be interested in too many
things. And books are a weakness. I've got thousands of books, literally, you know,
technical books. Very few novels. They're all mainly technical and informational books, you know.
I must give you one of mine. That'd be nice. Right, shall we give it a little push.
Now, sadly, the glue didn't hold this kind of plastic and the
little plug piece is still pushing into the body. So we're going to have to split it.
Yeah, it's got a little grip. It looks like it's been fixed in with some
hot glue, some like a glue gun, which hasn't held. So rather than try that again,
you see the gap behind the plug, which is sliding into. We're going to try and fill that.
Look at that. Feel that and see. Press that now. So it can't go back now.
Okay, let's put the top on. This is all located. Shall I press it in? Yeah.
So I just want to thank Tyvo for helping me mend my sound recorder that fits into my iPhone.
I'm very relieved that we seem to have had a successful repair. Hooray!
So as you will have seen, if you're watching the films, it worked through Split,
Trieste, Mykonos and we're just off to do Messina. So as long as it lasts,
the films will keep happening. Please subscribe to Doris Visits, the cruise port guide channel.
There's two ships in Split today, the MSC Symphonia and the P&O Azura. Please don't
forget to subscribe to this channel. Guess where we are? We're in Split. And if you want to pick up
the free walking tour, it's up here. So we found the free spirit walking tour. Free. You just give
a tip at the end. So this massive statue behind me is Gregory of Nien and you're supposed to
rub his toe for luck.
