Whey Everyone Loves Stone Town Zanzibar - the ultimate guide to this stunning destination. If you are thinking of going to Zanzibar, this is what you need to know. Everything!

This ancient slave town has new roads, new hospitals, new buildings, champagne bars, and it is thriving under a female President.

If there is space at the small container dock, a smaller cruise ship can berth there. Most cruise ships visiting Stone Town, Zanzibar, anchor in the harbour and use tender boats to transport passengers to the main port and ferry terminal of the multi-purpose Zanzibar Port.

The drop-off point is incredibly convenient, near the Old Dispensary and only a 5–15 minute walk from the edge of the historic UNESCO World Heritage area and the Old Fort.

Taxis are readily available, and hawkers will greet you with persistent smiles, but it is easy to walk from the port along the waterfront. If you only have one day, consider carefully whether Prison Island is worth the visit. It is not comparable to Robben Island in Cape Town or the slave facilities on Gorée Island, which also played central roles in the Atlantic slave trade. The Slave Museum is located on the mainland in Stone Town (see film), where enslaved people were traded. Prison Island itself primarily served as a quarantine station. On the mainland, a deeply moving monument and a cathedral built later commemorate the history of the East African slave trade.

The average wage is under five dollars a day, so the first price you are quoted is often ambitious. The time spent negotiating may not be worth the savings. Keep walking while you talk, and you may find a better deal.

Stone Town is a labyrinth of winding, narrow alleyways and is best explored on foot. We have included the WhatsApp contact details of a female guide in the film.

Dress Code: Zanzibar has a conservative and predominantly Muslim culture, so modest dress is appreciated when exploring Stone Town. There is generally no need to cover your shoulders or knees, but very short shorts may attract unwanted attention.

Drugs: Tanzania has strict drug laws. Do not expect to be going home if caught! Do not expect leniency if you are caught with illegal drugs. Penalties can be severe and may include imprisonment.
