John Singer Sargent | Master of Portrait Painting
“It is certain that at certain times talent entirely overcomes thought or poetry.” – John Singer Sargent
The first time I saw a portrait by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) I was completely struck by the loose and broad brushstrokes, still with such delicate precision. Looking closer, you can almost trace the artists’ process backwards, giving insight into the incredible talent required to paint with such confidence and seemingly effortlessness. Sargent was born in Italy, lived in London, was trained in France, but is especially remembered with his connection to and life in America. His artistic style is influenced by artists like James Whistler and Edgard Degas, and especially his landscapes and watercolors reveal his close ties to the impressionists.
