Lagom Cabin is a unique 90-square-meter dwelling in Gansbaai, South Africa, designed by Neo Architects with a concept that balances function, aesthetics, and nature. Inspired by the Protea Fynbos plant, its fragmented structure allows the landscape to seamlessly integrate with the interior. With a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, the cabin feels more spacious than its actual size and maximizes natural lighting. The Hygge philosophy is applied to create a cozy atmosphere in all seasons, with strategically placed windows that connect occupants to the surrounding environment. The layout includes a spacious bedroom opening to the pool area, a bathroom with scenic views, and a social space centered around a fireplace. Constructed with in-situ concrete, natural stone, and Diamondeck sheeting, the cabin harmonizes with the fynbos landscape. a unique dwelling designed by Neo Architects
and located in Gansbai, South Africa.
With a compact size of just 90 square meters,
this cabin achieves a perfect balance
between function, aesthetics,
and a deep connection with nature.
The name Lagom comes from the Swedish term meaning
not too much, not too little.
This concept is reflected in the cabin's design,
which draws inspiration from the Pretia Fynbos plant,
creating a fragmented structure akin to flower petals
that allows the building to breathe
within its surroundings.
This design also enables the Fynbos vegetation
to seep through the exterior walls into the interior spaces,
making nature an integral part of the living experience.
One of the main challenges of this project
was designing a comfortable home
within the 90 square meter constraint.
By using fewer materials,
Lagom Cabin exemplifies a low carbon footprint dwelling,
a concept that is increasingly relevant in today's world.
To maximize the available space,
the architects designed seamless transitions
between indoor and outdoor areas.
When the doors are open,
the interior feels much larger than its actual size,
while natural light enhances the intimate connection
with the expansive Fynbos landscape.
The design philosophy also incorporates
the concept of hygge,
a Scandinavian principle that emphasizes comfort
and happiness in simplicity.
During summer, the cabin functions
as an open pavilion blending with nature.
In winter or on rainy days,
the warm interior and central fireplace
provide a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Windows placed between the trusses
establish a visual connection
with the sky and surrounding environment,
reinforcing the relationship
between the occupants and nature.
In terms of layout, Lagom Cabin offers a living experience
deeply intertwined with its surroundings.
The spacious bedroom opens directly onto the pool area
and a second deck that faces uninterrupted Fynbos fields.
The bathroom features a shower and bathtub with scenic views,
creating a tranquil bathing experience.
Meanwhile, the social area is centered around a fireplace,
forming a warm and inviting gathering space.
The materials used in the construction of this cabin
were carefully selected to harmonize
with the natural environment.
The main structure utilizes insta-to-concrete,
while natural stone cladding helps integrate the building
into the Fynbos landscape.
The roof is covered with diamond-deck sheeting
for optimal protection.
Inside, exposed concrete elements blend seamlessly
with wooden ceilings, glass aluminum windows,
and granite tiles, achieving a balance of durability,
functionality, and modern aesthetics.
