The fear of not existing can also be explained as the fear of feeling empty. A lady in the audience explains her deep feeling of fear of becoming 'nothing' or 'empty' as she slowly dissolves her separate self, or ego.
Rupert explains that our true self is not anything that the object-knowing mind can know. In other words, our essential being is empty of objective qualities, which is referred to as emptiness in some traditions, or non-existent.
He further explains that the fear of letting go is not a fear of letting go of our being, but it is the fear of letting go of everything which we previously identified ourselves with. This is why the Sufis speak of dying before you die.
