SpaceX finally announced the REAL REASON for Ditching Grid Fin on Starship…Never Expected!
Elon Musk is famous for his bold decisions, sometimes going completely against the majority - but that opens up technological revolutions that few people dare to think of.
Recently, Musk once again announced that he would remove a grid fin from their super heavy booster - from 4 grid fins to 3 grid fins.
Why? The Super Heavy booster completed very well with 3 perfect catches by the Mechazilla’s arm in the past.
This is not really a small change this move raises questions about its safety and reliability.
So WHY? Is this a dare or a stroke of genius to optimize Starship?
In this video, the real reason for this bold move will be revealed, what consequences or breakthroughs it can lead to for the future of SpaceX.
Find out in today's Alpha Tech episode:

Remember Musk's presentation right after Flight 9? Pay attention, I'll rewind it for you, right at 25 minutes. Do you see the changes in this latest design?

Apart from the hot staging that we've discussed so much before, the Grid fins of this new Booster design also have an interesting difference. Look at it, there are only 3 Grid fins right below the hot staging. Musk wasn't kidding, he put this idea into practice. There are now only 3 grid fins instead of 4, and they are asymmetrically placed at 90, 90, and 180 degrees.

Also, look at the top of the booster that was placed right next to where Musk was standing during the presentation, the Grid fins have likely been rearranged. In the old version, the 4 Grid fins were arranged in a 120 - 60 - 120 -60 degree layout. That means when looking at the front angle of a Grid fin, we can see a 2/3 angle of the remaining grid fin. In this case, we can only see a single installation position, which means there will be 2 other grid fin installation positions hidden on the back.

So why did SpaceX dare to change a design that is considered the "gold standard" for rocket control during re-landing?
With the design on version 1, it works well, if not excellently. Precisely orienting the return to perform the 3-time catch with the Mechazilla's wand arm - something that no other company or organization in the world can do.
In previous flights, these grid fins acted like the rudders of an airplane, but instead of navigating thin air at low speeds, they had to control the direction of the booster's descent at supersonic speeds through the dense atmosphere.
