SpaceX just EXPOSED itself: Raptor BAD!!!
Starship Flight 14 Exposed the Raptor Problem SpaceX Needs to SOLVE...
Why SpaceX Raptor Engine not RELIABLE Yet?
Flight 14 proved something impressive: Starship can lose a Raptor and keep flying.
But that's also where a much bigger problem begins.
Because surviving an engine failure once is very different from operating dozens of reusable Starships, tankers, and lunar missions on a predictable schedule.
And that makes Raptor reliability one of the most important bottlenecks SpaceX still has to solve.
Almost everyone, including you and me, would agree that Starship Flight 14 was a success no matter how you look at it. But there was one obvious weakness that stood out during the mission: Raptor's performance. From the very beginning of the flight, one of the Super Heavy's 33 engines failed to operate. Then, just a few minutes later, we saw one of the vacuum-optimized Raptor engines on Ship 41 shut down as well.
However, an engine shutting down does not automatically mean the mission has failed. Starship was specifically designed with engine-out capability, and Flight 14 demonstrated that the vehicle could continue its mission even after losing one of its Raptor engines.
So, the question is no longer simply whether Starship can survive an engine failure. The bigger question is: how reliable does Raptor need to become before Starship can actually accomplish everything SpaceX wants it to do?
