If there was one bottleneck that rocket scientists, including Elon Musk, once believed could make or break Starship, it was the heat shield. After all, a reusable heat shield capable of surviving repeated atmospheric reentries had never been built before.
But after Flight 14, the heat shield is starting to look surprisingly solid. SpaceX even took two heat shield tiles that had previously flown on Ship 40 during Flight 13 and placed them in one of the areas exposed to the most intense heating, specifically to test whether they could survive another flight.
And both of them survived!
So, how did SpaceX make Starship’s heat shield this insanely effective?

Starship doesn't just need a heat shield that can survive extreme temperatures. It has to do two very different things at the same time: survive the intense heat of reentry and remain attached to the spacecraft long enough to face that heat. During reentry, the plasma surrounding Starship can reach temperatures of roughly 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit, forcing the tiles to withstand an enormous thermal shock as the vehicle goes from the extreme cold of space to thousands of degrees in just minutes. But before the tiles ever reach that environment, they have to survive the ascent. They are exposed to aerodynamic forces, vibration, changing pressure, and strong aerodynamic suction, particularly around areas such as the aft flaps.
