Over my gym journey, I've gone to a number of different gyms across the U.S. and have had a handful of colorful experiences. Interestingly enough, the majority of *awkward* situations I've been in have always been at my home gyms.
In this video, I've compiled 6 of the most common gym "mistakes" to avoid. Not all of these are necessarily "mistakes", but more so things to keep an eye out for! Some of these may seem obvious, but all the ones I've included are ones that I've experienced personally and see done regularly at my own gym.
As always, all of our gym journeys of ones of learning & growing, so never feel bad if you find that you might have done one of these before--so have I.
What else would you add to this list of things to avoid doing at the gym??

hey guys what's up my name is Naomi I'm
a nasm certified personal trainer and
I've been going to the gym for about
five or six years now and I've gone to a
lot of different a lot of different
types of gyms and today I just wanted to
share with you guys six things that I
would recommend avoiding when going to
the gym especially if you're new to the
gym and you're just you're still you're
still trying to figure out all the
etiquette and dos and don'ts of the gym
these won't be in any particular order
at all um and I would definitely say I'm
really just drawing from my own
experience and these are just my
recommendations every gym is different
every single person is different so
definitely do you
[Music]
always here's number one kind of like we
have been doing everywhere else with Co
don't invade your fellow gym members
personal space And while I think it's
perfectly okay to use machines that are
right next to each other I would
recommend against s lifting with them
probably about arms length of someone
else anywhere else inside the gym and
would definitely recommend against using
someone else's machine to perform an
exercise I've literally had people use a
squat rack while I squat so just be
mindful and respectful of those around
you and however much space you'd want
people to give you give that to them as
well two don't take the plates or
weights off of someone else's machine
that they're using who would do such a
thing well I can say from experience
that this definitely happens if you're
not sure if someone is still using a
piece of equipment simply ask them most
people at the gym are a lot nicer than
their resting gym faces may make them
[Music]
seem three speaking of taking weights
off the machine don't leave your plates
or weights around if you're moving
things around the gym and using a piece
of equipment make sure to put things
back where you found them if they don't
typically belong in that place and
always rack your weights thank you in
advance for being a role model gym
member I appreciate you and your fellow
gym members will as well
four when using a Barb on the squat rack
and unracking your weights don't take
off all the plates on one side first
without making sure that there's at
least 45 lb on the other side when using
multiple 45 lb plates or simply lifting
heavier if you unrack one entire side
first the barbell can literally flip
over I've seen it before because of the
imbalance so just make sure to leave at
least 45 lbs on one side and Alternate
between taking plates off each side
again avoid ing completely unracking one
side of the barell first if you're using
less than 45 lbs on each side you should
not have to worry about the barell
flipping over as this is typically not
enough weight to cause enough of an
imbalance in weights for the barble to
flip over but no harm and taking extra
caution
[Music]
either five don't feel rushed when using
a piece of equipment or machine that is
in high demand at the moment fellow gym
members May sometimes s come up to you
and ask you how many sets you have left
Etc it may also just wait around for you
to finish up so they can use your
machine but never let this make you feel
as though you need to cut your time on
the machine short but of course be
mindful and considerate of others as
well especially during high traffic
times at the gym when you know it's busy
do your sets and rest an appropriate
length of time in between
sets six you actually don't need to put
clams on the bar when using the smith
machine because of how the machine is
made it's literally impossible for your
weights to fall off the sides of the bar
meaning that it's not necessary to put
clamps outside of your plates to hold
them in place because they cannot go
anywhere and I promise you that they
absolutely will not go anywhere if you
don't use the clamps I 100% have used
the clamps on the Smith machine before
thinking it was going to help completely
not knowing I really didn't need to so
please don't feel any type of way if
you've done this before just looking out
for each other besti thanks for hanging
