SpaceX's New Plan to Land Starship on the Moon in 2025 while NASA SLS...
While NASA is grappling with whether to completely abandon the SLS lunar rocket program for its mission to return to the Moon after more than 50 years, SpaceX has revealed a groundbreaking plan for their giant ship: Starship spacecraft potentially landing on the Moon this year.
This comes as a wake-up call for NASA, demonstrating Starship's immense potential to replace the government agency's complex and costly program.
So, how is Starship advancing to achieve a lunar landing this year?

The space race has entered one of its most competitive phases, with the Moon as the primary target for nations worldwide. NASA’s Artemis program has become the center of attention, aiming to return humans to the lunar surface within this decade. However, the latest schedule adjustments announced in late 2024 have pushed Artemis 2 to April 2026 and Artemis 3 to mid-2027. While this timeline still keeps NASA ahead of its competitors, waiting over two years to see Starship—the crucial vehicle for Artemis—make its first lunar landing may feel like a prolonged delay for those eager to witness this historic milestone.

However, there’s no need for disappointment, as Starship does not necessarily have to wait until 2027 to reach the Moon. This is why an uncrewed Starship Human Landing System (HLS) mission could happen sooner—possibly even this year.
This mission was highlighted in last year’s roadmap, outlining key milestones for the Artemis program and Starship HLS development. According to the plan, SpaceX could attempt an uncrewed lunar landing demonstration by late 2025. This effort would run parallel to refining Starship V2 and building the necessary refueling infrastructure, possibly Starship V3.
