The third Mazurka, in F minor, returns to a folkish, purely rustic atmosphere. Again we behold, perhaps even more distinctly than in the Mazurka in E major from Op. 6, some integrally depicted scene. Themes pass before our imagination, appearing, disappearing and appearing once again. The scene opens pianissimo with bagpipes – an insistently repeated bass motif. Then an oberek appears as the principal theme, played con anima and rubato. This is followed by a kujawiak tune, floating along gently in stepwise intervals, interrupted by the violent entrance of a mazur. Then a new kujawiak, with the melody assigned, as often in Chopin, to the cello register (bars (56)–64).
