Hey everybody, happy Friday. Happy Friday everybody. Thanks for joining us once
again to chat a little bit about real estate and a lot about San Diego.
I'm trying not to look natural. I know you told me not to say that.
I told you to look natural but don't say that and then you did say that.
Sorry. All right well if you're joining us please let us know
where you're joining from and what you're up to this weekend.
Well Gangster Ern, I'm talking to you. We'll also explain why we're wearing
Calgary Canada shirts even though we're in San Diego and talking about San Diego.
That's right.
And I'm gonna have to apologize to you in advance but I wore this shirt yesterday
and I thought this shirt had one more day in it and I'm not sure that it does.
So that's good.
I was sorry.
Well if you get closer to you meet me you might know what I'm talking about.
I also work in dance practice.
Smell it.
Okay that's good. Good for you.
This one I just unfolded out of the bag and put it on.
First wearing.
All right let's go to market minute. Are you ready?
I am ready for market minute.
Okay let's do this and go.
So this week in San Diego real estate the number of homes for sale continued to grow
on an increase in new listings which was greater than the increase in pending sales.
As you can see pending sales and new listings have been separated for at least three months now
which has caused this to grow which is good news for buyers and
still not terrible news for sellers but buyers.
Well you've got more options right now than you've had in a very long time.
I think the summer of 2022 was the last time we saw listings or homes for sale over 5,000.
Interest rates climbed again this week although we do expect them to be vacillating down here
in the 6 to 6.5 range possibly lower going forward and we hope it stays that way.
Median price was up just a tiny bit month over month but that is after two consecutive
months of significant decline and that's what's going on.
Good job.
Thank you.
Right on time.
All right so now we're going to talk about some weekend events.
Oh first let's talk about why we're wearing the Calgary shirt.
Let's say let's say why why why would you do that?
Why are we wearing these shirts?
Well you I actually have never been to Calgary.
No.
But you and John went there for John's 18th birthday last weekend.
We did.
John's 18th birthday was actually in the middle of last week but then Friday we flew out to
Calgary.
We actually spent quite a long time on the ground here in San Diego on the tarmac in
the airplane.
Couldn't figure out why until a couple days later when I read that there was a near miss
on the runway shortly before our departure which we're glad that the planes did not collide.
I saw that on the news.
That was in San Diego right?
It was and it backed things up at the airport for quite a while but not as badly as it would
have been backed up.
Those planes actually hit each other.
Yeah good thing.
Anyway that's a whole other story but John and I went to Calgary.
All right well would you like to share a few pictures?
I would.
First let me tell you that Alberta, Canada has a drinking age of 18.
Which is one of the reasons why John thought that he might like to go on a trip with his
dad to Calgary.
He actually picked Calgary prior to knowing but it was a bonus and it really kind of opened
my eyes to like you know in this place this young man is treated as an equal citizen to
all the others and then the second you get out of there no more.
And you know I guess I understand the reason for a 21 year old drinking age although I've
felt that if a young person is old enough to go to war they're probably old enough to
buy a drink but who knows we will how can we question the wisdom of our of our government.
Anyway let's let's have a look at some of these pictures.
Here we are on the airplane on the way to Calgary.
And this is still over the United States but because you're on the way to Alberta
they allow 18 year olds to have a drink.
John had himself a Captain Morgan and Coke.
John's not a big drinker.
He probably just had the one drink.
He had the one drink.
You know so but he did enjoy the novelty of being able to buy it.
So that was nice.
And then here we are in the Riverfront Park bridge.
This is Riverfront Park in Calgary and this is a fairly interesting looking footbridge
that we walked across and very picturesque city not anything like Vancouver in terms
of having big mountains around and everything kind of like more like prairie land around
there but also it's fall so the trees are changing color.
The river looked really really cold and it was cool there.
I think it was about 40 degrees when we were walking around mid-afternoon.
Here we are outside the Falafel King getting ready to have some
Donairs as you know here in the States.
I think those are Euros but they're slightly different in Canada.
And there's John with his food.
John is wearing an Aztec shirt in most of these.
He has quite a collection of FDSU shirts and he seemed to bring most of them with him to Canada.
He was hardcore representing San Diego State and got a lot of love in Calgary for that.
The people of Calgary are just so friendly.
Amazingly friendly.
Different San Diego State shirt.
Yes.
They got he got himself a free piece of ice cream cake.
Looks like he's got a drink there too.
Yeah in old fashion.
He ordered at this restaurant and then here I am with my friend John Franco who works
he works as a guitar tech for lots of different bands.
He happens to be on tour currently with Sebastian Bach who just happened to be
at this Back Alley nightclub in Calgary that night and I was able to connect with John.
He went to the same high school I did and anyway we're friends and John is a great guitar guy and
I got to hang out with him a little bit.
So you were hanging out with two dudes named John at the Sebastian Bach show in Calgary.
Right.
Only John Franco had to go work and then me and John went to
me and John went inside and this was John's first exposure to a loud rock show.
We were right up in front and Sebastian Bach here looking very serious about what he's doing
and he was he was really trying hard to entertain us and John was noticing that his ears were
being hurt by the loudness of the music and I was like,
you know, I think my ears are just permanently ringing.
So that's anyway Sebastian Bach is a Canadian guy and he seemed very happy to be performing
in Canada and then here we are at YYC which is Calgary International Airport on the way out
and that is me and John's trip to Canada.
All right well I'm glad you all were able to enjoy John's 18th birthday bash there.
It was fun.
We had a good time and I would highly recommend going to Calgary.
Not that there's anything phenomenal to do there that I found.
We did find that the restaurants are awesome.
The people are super friendly.
Very clean city just a cool place to kind of walk around and chill out and they raise beef nearby
so all the burgers everything's really good there.
It's a great great place but let's get back to the finest city on earth and that is San Diego,
California.
All right well let's talk about stuff going on out and about in San Diego
and right now it is spiny lobster season.
Yeah.
God every year I mean to get some spiny.
We're gonna do it this year.
Let's get some damn spiny lobsters.
I mean not that we have never had spiny lobster but we've missed it a couple years in a row.
Not for a while we haven't.
So the commercial fisher folks have been able to start catching the lobsters on October 2nd.
So that I think recreational folks maybe I don't know there's different timelines but
commercial lobster fishing is on right now and it is on through March 15th I believe.
Anyway it's happening now.
So San Diegoville has put together a list of their recommendations for where to get spiny lobsters.
Let's find out.
Can you guess what would be number one?
Well Mitch's Seafood it's got to be right up there.
Yeah of course and that's my favorite restaurant Mitch's Seafood in Point Loma.
That's where we're going.
San Diego favorite.
Porto Nuevo style.
Right a half or full lobsters.
Okay so let's just go right to Mitch's and they have it on their Instagram.
Now Mitch put together a little video for us.
So let's just go ahead and watch this and they made this they made this two weeks ago but
they show at the end you know what the lobster plate looks like and stuff.
That's funny this lobster costume has big claws but spiny lobsters do not have big claws.
Well they probably didn't have a spiny lobster costume online.
44 bucks okay.
Yeah so half lobster plate 25 whole lobster plate 44 comes with all this stuff here.
The Mexican style well they took it away from us now but Mexican style corn,
corn tortillas, crema, cabbage salsa, lemons and drawn butter.
God why aren't we going there right now?
I know well we're we're going to meet some friends later.
We should have we should have had them go for lobster but.
Well it's going to be crowded there on a Friday night so we'll go on a weekday or something.
Um your birthday is on a Sunday.
Well I don't know if you want to go get lobster on your birthday.
Well we'll see.
We'll think of it.
That sounds like a pretty damn good idea.
Now if you go down to Puerto Nuevo in Mexico I'm sure they're cheaper but then you got to go all
the way down there.
I like Mitch's I'm going to go to Mitch's.
Yeah I remember that one time we did have lobster in Puerto Nuevo and it was pretty good.
It was good yes but again I'm going to go to Mitch's.
All right.
Interesting story there.
I think we've told that story at least once.
We've told that story before.
Our friend Bob Jones told the waiters it was my birthday and it was not my birthday
but they kept bringing us tequila shots nonetheless.
Yes and I think that's why Bob kept and this was I don't know 20 years ago probably.
We were you know younger and more foolish and our friend Bob Jones
I think wanted us to get into trouble so.
He was trying to get us.
He was trying to get us in trouble by having the servers at the restaurant in Puerto Nuevo
serve us too much tequila and he almost succeeded but we did not get in trouble.
No we managed to keep it together.
We got back across the border and all was well.
All right so it is a spooky season here in San Diego.
There's all kinds of Halloween events going on this weekend and you all don't need us to
tell you what they are.
We've got Haunted Trail at Valboa Park.
My friend Brenda did a lot of the painting there for the spooky spot so that's cool.
We've got you know Carlsbad Strawberry Company, Gaslamp Walking Tour.
We've got you know Valboa Park and Legoland and all this stuff.
But I found this one thing that I had never heard of before.
It's in El Cajon.
It's the Haunted Amusement Park and probably if I had actually grown up in San Diego I might
know about this.
So it was Marshall Scottie's Playland and it was an amusement park in El Cajon and it's
since been abandoned and now it's all dilapidated and it's a broken down old amusement park
which I'm surprised I had never heard of.
But if you have ever been there when it was open let us know in the comments when you
were there and how you liked it.
Share a memory.
Also our friends at Synergy One Lending are giving away pumpkins tomorrow.
If you want a pumpkin message me I'll tell you where to go to hook up with Synergy One
Lending and get your pumpkin.
So this is an old broken down amusement park and they turn it into a haunted trail every
year.
It's like a one mile trail with spooky stuff.
I've never heard of this.
Exactly.
I don't know how we haven't heard of it and I don't think I'm going to go looking at it.
It's not my kind of spooky but it looks like the kind of spooky that a lot of people might
like.
So it's privately owned.
I'm not sure exactly who owns it but you can buy a ticket to go out there.
Let's have a little bit of a look about.
Okay.
Scottie's.
Formerly Scottie's Scare Trail.
Haunted amusement.
Used to be Marshall Scottie's Playland.
Once joyful sounds of fun and laughter are now replaced with screams of terror as visitors
make their way through the remnants of the carnival rides from the 1960s.
Wow.
Yeah.
The Haunted Scare Trail takes you under the old roller coaster around the Ferris wheel
and into the bumper cars.
Will you put on 3D glasses to experience?
How do you?
3D glasses to experience out of this world visuals.
You will then have to find your way through the circus maze before the sideshow freaks
find you.
Why is it we don't want to go do this?
Because it sounds too scary.
Oh come on.
You want to do it?
I don't know.
But don't rest yet.
You will still have to zigzag your way out of the steep sleepaway camp sleepaway camp
cabin.
Oh, I'm not going there.
No, thank you.
See the original haunted ride repair shop and make your way through the old attraction
graveyard.
You'll see the broken down cars and the roller coaster.
And I'm not going.
I mean, it sounds super spooky, but I know a lot of people like this kind of stuff.
It sounds like something if you live stream that people would watch.
Yeah.
So here's their Instagram.
Now, your friend, your friend, Barb, did the art for what now?
No, Brenda.
That's a different artist.
Oh, not Barb.
Brenda was in the.
She was in that last dance production that we did.
She was one of the.
Not Barb the tattoo artist.
No, a different artist.
All my friends are artists for some reason.
Well, that's a given.
Okay.
So here are some spooky pictures.
And, you know, you can see that this is just not.
I don't know.
I mean, I like kind of like witchy, spooky stuff, but I don't like scary clown stuff.
I'm not down for scary clown stuff, but I know a lot of people are.
So you might want to check this out.
And I went to Google Maps and I found where it is.
It's like here.
It's kind of in a, you know, a corner of.
I don't even know if I've been out here.
That's way out there.
They're calling it El Cajon, but it is.
It's like this.
El Cajon goes on forever.
This sort of unincorporated part.
But so what exit is this?
Oh, it's off the 8th somewhere.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, go down to the 8th and let's see where the.
Oh, here you, you.
I don't know what you're looking for.
Let's see what the nearest exit is.
I'm just trying to figure out where I get off.
Oh, this is.
What is this street here?
I don't know.
Oh, Blossom Valley Road.
Okay.
All right.
Okay.
Anyway, it's, it's way out here.
It's way out there.
Yeah.
Old, old abandoned amusement park.
So it does sound interesting.
If you go, let us know how it is.
Many treasures in East San Diego County.
Don't count East San.
Go, don't count.
Go down East County.
Don't count East San Diego County out.
There's stuff going on out there.
Plenty to see and do.
And lots of, lots of friendly people.
And great, great stuff.
Well, speaking of that, some folks from El Cajon are looking to revitalize the downtown
to make it the next gas lamp area.
So I didn't know this either.
And again, I guess if I had grown up here, rather than just spending the last 20 plus
years of my life, I might know this, but El Cajon had, they had a ban on new bars for
decades because apparently things got too rowdy back in the day.
Things were too happening, too wild and crazy, too fun in El Cajon.
So the city leaders banned new bars.
It's too much fun out here.
Exactly.
That's how they talk too.
Yeah.
So now the city leaders are considering changing the zoning laws to help transform it into
an entertainment district.
So they're, oh, here, Michelle is among the city council members looking to make El Cajon
lit again.
And I might wear a hat that said that, make El Cajon lit again.
I'm not even from El Cajon, but if you're looking to make somewhere lit, I'll go for
it.
We used to have clubs and go from one club to the next.
It was fun.
We have nothing for 21 to 41 year olds.
But I don't know about that.
You have to be under 42 to have fun?
I guess.
I don't know.
Okay.
Well, I guess it's not for us.
I guess we could just go to bed now.
Go to bed and rest my head.
Don't go to El Cajon.
We're too old to have fun.
Well, now I'm kind of hurt and offended, and I don't know if I can read the rest of this
Oh, well, don't worry about it.
Anyway, they're looking to make El Cajon more fun.
I guess it's not for us because we're older than 41.
But if you are 41 or under and still young enough to have fun, you might be able to have
a good time in El Cajon soon.
I will point this out.
Okay, so folks are always talking about how downtown San Diego is falling into disrepair
and it's nasty and this and that and the other thing.
The natural state of downtowns throughout history has been seedy.
Lots of bars and worse in San Diego's past history.
Nice, shiny, friendly, clean downtowns are actually fairly short-lived if you look at
just about every major city throughout history.
Seattle, San Diego, New York, all of them, really.
You look at any city, check the downtowns.
Downtowns sort of live and breathe, and they come and go.
And anyway.
I know you're connected because you're the city council or you're the community council
chairperson.
Do you have this person's phone number?
Because I like to call them up right now and tell them how I feel about their age restriction
on fun.
Who is this?
The city council person?
Whoever this person is.
Michelle Mitchell?
I'm sure I can find it.
I'll get her on the line tomorrow.
All right, we'll talk to her tomorrow.
We're calling you at home, Michelle.
We want to talk about this age range.
All right.
We think you should extend it to at least, well, for me, I guess you'd have to extend
it past 51, please.
I don't think we need permission to have fun.
I think we can have more fun sitting on our own couch than this person can have out in
the funnest venue in the newly revived downtown.
I just wanna, I just wanna, old people wanna have fun.
All right, I better move on before I say something I'll regret.
Okay, so the giant pandas have a webcam now.
At the zoo, yes.
I'm trying to refresh it here.
Oh, okay, here we go.
So this is supposed to be live now.
I guess it is.
Okay, it's twilight.
I don't see any pandas.
I saw some pandas earlier and they were sleeping.
But this is a big deal.
They have a, you know, now you can, you don't have to go to the zoo to see the pandas.
You can watch them online.
We've got to put this up later.
Theoretically.
Okay, well.
While we're sitting in front of the TV.
It looks like the pandas aren't there now.
So let's go to, these are also good pandas, the red pandas.
Let's see if the red pandas are doing anything.
And they're always there.
They've always been there, right?
Yeah, they seem to be busy too.
Maybe it's feeding time for the pandas.
So we're sorry we didn't actually show you any pandas.
But go back later and check it out.
How typical is that?
You go to the San Diego Zoo and don't see the pandas.
Well, at least we didn't have to, you know, leave our chairs to not see pandas.
Okay, well.
All right.
So you know how that Amazon Fresh store has been sitting vacant in Poway for years?
Yeah.
It used to be, it was an Albertsons.
And then it's been a lot of stuff.
It was an Albertsons, a Hagen, the Atlas.
Atlas Market.
Which I actually liked.
They had that great international food court, which kind of went downhill.
And we were sad to see that happen.
Yes.
So that didn't work out.
And now it's been a vacant Amazon Fresh.
Well, it had an Amazon Fresh sign and then they took it away.
But now they're stepping up their plans to open it.
So the last we heard it had been infinitely delayed.
Well, now it looks back on track.
And it seems like the issue was that the cart technology was just walk out.
So you fill up your cart and then you just walk out.
And then we just RFID you.
Well, apparently.
But also, however that system worked, it relied here.
System relied heavily on manual monitoring by around 1,000 workers based in India.
OK.
So workers in India are watching you shop in Patway?
Yeah.
Interesting.
And I would be kind of skeptical of this, too.
Because I want to see what I'm being charged.
If I just walk out and then I look at my receipt later, what recourse do I have?
Ring up, right.
Or if I have, you know, dual items and I only got one or coupon or whatever.
Yeah, all the time.
So it seems like they kind of scrapped this just walk out thing.
Well, now what they're doing are they're doing dash cart technology,
where it's more like the cart is a self-checkout station.
So you've got your own self-checkout station in your cart, which I like because I like
self-checkout because I can, you know, at my leisure,
look at what I'm ringing up and make sure my coupons are being applied.
Until the machine decides you need help.
Oh, yeah, that happens to me every time.
But theoretically, I like self-checkout.
So I kind of like the idea of a self-checkout being in the shopping cart.
But I bet there's always going to be problems,
and they're going to have to have people there to help.
Anyway, they're back on track with this plan.
And they say that they're expected to open in mid-2025.
Well, we will wait and see.
And I will say again, I seem to have a lot to say tonight.
But people, you need people.
No matter how automated things get, you need the people.
That's true.
It's true in just about every industry.
I mean, they're trying to eliminate people, driverless cars,
apps to help you buy a home.
You don't need a realtor.
Guess what?
You still need some people.
You need people.
Speaking of people, we are going to meet some of our people in just a minute.
And I had one more item, but I'm going to save it for next week
because I don't want our people to wait on us.
So you're going to tease it and leave it, huh?
I'm not even going to say what it is, but it's a new world record.
Oh, I know.
Oh, stay tuned for next week.
You have to wait seven days for that.
Sorry, folks.
But we'll see you next time.
So stay tuned.
All right.
All right, everybody.
It's always great hanging out.
Sooner or later, we're going to get this cracking so that the live chat's jumping.
However, we're new to YouTube Live, and we're working it out.
And just like we got to 1,000 subscribers and now way more than that,
we will get that chat jumping.
It's just a matter of intention and action, and we'll make it happen.
So, you know, Light Ice Coffee and Drum Adrian and all you folks.
Grown Up Gaming.
Shout out to all you folks for watching, and we'll be back.
Thanks for joining us, and we'll see you next time.
See ya.
