Hey everybody, happy Friday and welcome to TGIF San Diego where we keep you updated on the market,
share the latest San Diego buzz and kick off the weekend together. Let's kick it off together. How's
your weekend so far? Well we're kicking it off right now so so far so good. All right well let's
start with market minute where you will give us a one minute update on the market and then we'll
move on to the other stuff. Good. Ready? Let's do it. And go. Okay so this week in San Diego real
estate the plateauing of inventory continues in July. After months and months of rising inventory
July has seen a plateau which is interesting and we'll see if it continues. New listings down
sharply after being up sharply and pending sales increasing now for two weeks in a row although
not by a ton. We are remaining right around that 450 mark where we have been for so many months.
Now let's look at price reductions over the last seven days. 9.22 percent of the active listings
reduced price in the last seven days and this is the sixth week that we've been tracking that so
this is somewhat interesting and interest rates remained about the same. So that is what's going
on in San Diego real estate this week. A lot of cat hair in the air. Did you notice that? Yes kind of.
I'm not sure what's going on there but all right well let's move on to a segment we haven't done
for a while. Let's talk about backyard news. Backyard news. This week in backyard news.
There's some exciting stuff happening in our backyard this week. Our dragonfruits are blooming.
I don't even know how many dragonfruit plants we have. It's a lot but several. So we had 21
flowers bloom this week and we have to hand fertilize all of them because dragonfruits
are only open at night, the flowers anyway, and they're pollinated by bats in their native
territory but we don't have that many bats around here so we have to do it ourselves. You can't trust
bats anyway. If you want something done right you got to do it yourself. You don't know what a bat's
going to do. Anyway here's a little clip. Oh man is this going to give me a problem?
It is going to be a problem. It'll come around I'm sure. Are you sure? Yes. Oh here we go. Okay
these are some of our dragonfruits. There's a chapstick for scale. They're big. Big flowers.
Excuse me. Yes and you can see like if you pause back there for a second you can see what they
look like before they open up. Yeah. It's a pretty intense flower. So most of
these are they're like a white flesh variety and our neighbor gave me a cutting of these in 2020
and I've been growing those from there but then we got some new ones and they have bloomed for
the first time. We have a purple haze and an American beauty. Here is fertilizing the purple
haze last night. See some pollen from the from the other ones. It's self-sterile so you need
to pollinate it with someone else's pollen. All right anyway that was backyard news. Fascinating.
Yes now let's move on to a weekend news. Okay. And everybody knows the big event in San Diego.
Somebody. What? Somebody posted on Reddit. They said I was thinking of going to San Diego this
weekend and hotels are really expensive. Is there anything going on? Duh. Yeah it's Comic-Con.
So I'm sure everyone has you know friends or family who are at Comic-Con or maybe they're
at Comic-Con themselves. I have several friends who are there. I figured we could just check out
a little bit of this CBS 8 footage to see what's going on down there.
They stay around for for quite some time even beyond Comic-Con. I'm starting to really feel
the character here of Clark Kent especially now that we're on the streets where it's in the full
people-watching mode. We're seeing all the beautiful cosplay costumes. All right well let's
see the people. That guy looks like Clark Kent. Look at the costumes you guys. To do the duo pairing here
what goes into putting this all together? Awesome shoes. All right well I wanted like a big picture.
These guys.
Looks like a long line. These people are on the line ride. Yeah they're on the line ride.
What's the outside? Are they gonna go inside?
Across from the ballpark this interactive zone is all free. So we are already seeing so many
also so many photo ops. We only have like two minutes left. I'm afraid they're not going to
show us inside. There's another line ride. I don't think they're going to show us inside.
You can buy a ticket to stand in that line. Well do you have anything else to say about Comic-Con?
All right well let's look at the hotels. Let's see how much it costs if you want to
you want to stay downtown tomorrow night. So we one of our favorite hotels is the Bay Club and
it's usually I don't know what did we pay last time we stayed at the Bay Club? $2.20 something.
Looks like it's oh that's the Best Western. They're not even gonna tell us. Maybe it's
sold out. I don't know. Yeah Humphreys is $5.25. Wow yeah. Oh my okay here's the stuff downtown.
$17.98. What's that? Oh we stayed there one time in Manchester. Well maybe we stayed there twice.
I don't know a couple of times. Not for $1,700. No we used to stay uh what was this place?
Yeah the Holiday Inn. Is it still the Holiday Inn? No it's the window. I think it's like
then it was the Wyndham and now it's still the Wyndham. Anyway it's very expensive to stay
downtown this weekend. $5.87. $4.19. Well I remember last year we were looking even all the way up here
hotels were uh were pricey. Mission Valley. You can stay I bet that's a hostel. No oh it's
Howard Johnson. Okay. Hojo. $900 for the Bahia. Wow all right. What's the Dana? $3.85. Wow okay.
We're thinking of having your uh family reunion there uh what is that next year? Yeah yeah this
this weekend next year or well the weekend the weekend after. The one that's not Comic-Con.
Right and it's uh $2.59. That's pretty reasonable for the weekend. Um okay so speaking of hotels
Open Table has put out a oh Open Table and Kayak travel travel places and restaurant places
uh have put out a list of the top 25 hotel restaurants across America. Let's see if
there's any San Diego destinations on there. Okay top 25 hotel restaurants and look right here. Oh
Addison. Yeah. I've been outside that place. Well we ate at um the restaurant that's right next to
it it's like the Clubhouse Grill or something but we've never actually been to Addison. No.
Uh let's see we've got Palm Desert, Anaheim. We stayed at this place the JW Marriott. That's
pretty nice. Yeah yeah. We never ate at the restaurant. We did not. Okay well it looks
like we just have one San Diego location but that's okay. Let's see what's going on there
at Addison. I've heard good things about it. I'm not sure I will ever go there because well unless
someone else is paying. Yeah. I couldn't even find a menu here but it sounds like what they're
what they want you to do is order this uh 10 course tasting menu.
10 courses. It's $385 a person. Oh hello. They recommend supplemental wine pairings. Of course
they do. We recommend you buy some very expensive wine with this meal. I don't know what any of this
stuff is but I'm sure it's all very delicious. I'm sure it's delicious. Yeah there's no doubt
about it. I mean it's hard for me to get into kind of tiny tiny food. Tiny food. I mean I'm
sure it's delicious. I have no doubt that it's delicious and you know but god $385. I could buy
a lot of stuff at Costco for $385. All right let's move on to animal news. Nice. Yes so apparently
there are some rare purple sea snails washing ashore on San Diego beaches. Now I haven't seen
any but a lot of people are seeing them. It's a rare species of sea snail called, I'm not sure if
I'm pronouncing this correctly, Janthena. It's kind of like saying John Cena but you have a lisp.
Yeah Janthena. That's kind of fun to say. Colorful vibrant shells and their ability to float
thanks to a natural bubble raft. Now we we walked on the beach today for miles and didn't see any
of these. No we were fairly these are they were found on La Jolla shores. These are cute. I wish
I'd found some. We were close to La Jolla shores. We we walked from Torrey Pines. We walked about
two and a half miles south. About a five mile walk. You started out at Torrey Pines and you
start walking towards La Jolla shores. Eventually you pass by some interesting things.
No sea snails but other stuff. Black's Beach. A lot of sausage.
We were just walking by quickly. We didn't we didn't stop and you know we didn't we didn't
didn't take our clothes off. Yeah yeah we didn't want to put on that much sunscreen. Right no we
we didn't have time to put on sunscreen. Yeah so purple snail shells. In other animal news
the San Diego Zoo now has a duo duo of Tasmanian doubles. Tasmanian double duo debuts at the San
Diego Zoo. So these folks are from New South Wales Australia. They're apparently they're
I think they're endangered. Oh yes they're endangered carnivores. One of nature's most
elusive and endangered carnivores. They're pretty cute. Only Tasmanian devil I've ever
seen was the ant was the guy on the Bugs Bunny cartoon. Yeah it sounds like they don't really
behave like that Tasmanian devil. Although they do have expressive growls and spirited personalities
which they don't have any videos here for us. But anyway you can go check them out at the where are
they the the Australian Outback. That's where they have the koalas and some other some other
folks who are native to Australia. Animals? Folks. Animals. Oh okay. Or you know. Folks. I don't well
I don't know if there are any humans who are native to Australia there but animal folks. At the zoo?
I don't know. There are humans native to Australia. At the zoo? I don't know about that. Like on
display or just. No no no I don't think we keep I don't think we keep Australians in cages.
I'm just talking about the zoo. Why am I in this cage? No I just mean at the zoo not like in the
whole world. Let me out of this cage mate. Yeah no I know that there are natives people people who are
native to Australia but I don't know if they're at the zoo. Maybe they are I'm just saying I don't
know. All right how do we go down that road? Tasmanian devils check them out. Check them out.
That was a confusing discussion but okay moving on let's go to Costco. Where the food courts are
going. A big change. You know I saw this headline and I was like what are they gonna do? Oh my
goodness and I read this I was like. They are switching at the food court from Pepsi to Coke.
Oh my. Yeah and they didn't even say why but it sounds like they had switched in 2013 to Pepsi.
Yeah because they it's really important to keep the combo of the hot dog and soda at $1.50
and they switched to Pepsi to try and preserve that but for some reason now they're switching
back to Coke. I actually prefer Coke. I don't drink that much soda but if I'm gonna have a
soda I prefer Coke. Yeah I definitely also rarely drink a soda but if I'm gonna go for a soda it's
generally a Coke. Well now you can get one with your $1.50 hot dog which it must be a loss leader
for them. I can't imagine that I don't know how much it costs them per hot dog and soda combo.
I don't either I mean you can you can certainly eat a I mean you get a lot of food at the Costco
food court for not very much it's just not a whole lot there to really you know a hot dog you know
one or two hot dogs a year. Especially if you don't eat meat there's not a lot going on. Oh
yeah for you it's nothing. Okay let's check out. Chicken bake that doesn't really have that much
chicken in it. Let's check out the health department website and see which restaurants
have been temporarily closed down this week due to violations. Yes. There's one just down the hill
from us OG's. Oh yeah. So OG's on Rancho Carmel Drive. What's the problem? Let's see what let's
see what happened. Action history. If you go down here it looks like they've had they have sort of a
they've had trouble in the past but the most recent problems uh major vermin a lot of vermin
problems and so then they had another inspection looks like we've got some other stuff storing
things linens utensils. Yeah but again the vermin thing it's it's such a broad
category they don't really tell you what what the issue was. So I noticed this that wow they're
going to make us wait again. So there's another business that it was also shut down it was a
catering business in the same building as OG's which confused me a little bit because only OG's
occupies this space. Um like here here I looked it up on the here's Google Earth so I mean this
whole building that's just OG's there. Yeah maybe they also use the kitchen there to cater. Well I
So I explained this situation and of course ChatGPT starts with telling me it's a great
question. They have to compliment my question. Yes. I feel good about myself. Yes. So it sounds
like I got a chef LLC as part of OG's corporate catering arm. Uh-huh. So they offer off-site
catering um and anyway that's what it's called. I'm not sure why they wouldn't just call it OG's
catering but you know they didn't ask me. Hopefully they leave the vermin behind. Yes.
So I didn't really none of these other ones are places that I don't think I've been to any of
these places or I've certainly driven by and seen the signs and stuff but I don't know that I've
been to any of these other places. Yalla Habibi? Yalla Habibi? No I've never been there. No.
Quickie Mart on University. Okay. Well the health department has obviously been busy.
Rancho Bernardo Senior Center. Yeah. Trying to poison the seniors. Do you think it's vermin
there too? Let's see what the problem was. Food safety. Oh yeah vermin again. It's just so I mean
it's again the complaint from the restaurant industry and I can see where they're coming
from is that they don't differentiate. You know vermin can be anything from you know a
little bug to a rat to you know who knows what. Well hopefully they get it sorted out. Yes.
All right let's go to New Zealand. Okay. Where a cat named Leo has earned the nickname Leonardo
de Pinchy after he's been shown so he's been around the neighborhood stealing things. Oh. He
stolen 150 things in the past nine months. Wow he's only 14 months old too. 14 month old
Tonkinese is hanging around the neighborhood stealing things and bringing them home.
Let's check. I want to see the video on this. In fact he is a cat burglar dubbed Leonardo
de Pinchy. Oh yeah New Zealand accent. Leonardo de Pinchy yes. Leo has been nicking hundreds
hundreds of neighbors clothes on Auckland's North Shore and he's with me now. This is Leo right here
and his owner Helen is here as well. Helen we always start these interviews with something
positive but you know I've got a cat in here that's positive but tell me something positive
before we get underway. 20s or my 30s. You haven't through it. By age you are. Nine months. 150 things
in that short amount of time. Yeah yeah he gets busy. So he basically goes out thieving every
day by the sounds of things. If it's sunny he's busy but mainly it's Saturday and Sunday when
people do their laundry and they've got it out on their washing lines or clothes horses. So a weekend
thief. So what sort of things has Leo stolen? Really expensive jersey with the tags on stuffed toys
um lots and lots of heaps underpants and heaps of socks. He looks like a nice cat. Active wear
hats, sports bras, shorts, East Coast based rugby socks, an All Blacks jersey
you name it kind of everything really. Yeah so an expensive jersey with the tags on what kind of
jersey? I want to see more footage of this cat. It was like yeah we saw him dragging that through
the garden and then the next day it was back again so he really liked that one so she shucked
two in those mouths. They should let him keep that snake. If that were my snake I would let
men's, women's, any preference? Mainly men's. Boxer shorts but sometimes women. There's been
a couple of lacy pairs a woman on Sunday came around to collect some stuff after I posted it
because there was. All right are we good with Leonardo DiPinci?
And then she was like those are mine and there's 11 other things that are hers.
And what kind of cat is he because we haven't got him out yet. He's a Tonkinese so he's kind
quite small. Are we going to get him out? Yeah let's get him out. I know that you love him but
anyone else. Here he is. Oh my goodness he's gorgeous. He's a bit of a cutie. Yeah he is.
He's very well behaved. He's looking for something to steal right now.
Look what I've got down here. It's something he's gonna like a lot. Could it be bud?
Which is a good pair. They're not mine but a good pair of men's undies from the North Shore
as well. They're from the North Shore so it's regional. These are my mate's undies. What do
you think Leo? From the North Shore. He's giving him his friend's underwear. Yes.
What do you think? Hang on. Let's see. Let's put some other clothes out here,
some socks and things. I think he's probably going to jump away.
What are you going to do? This is important.
Oh what a nice cat. Very much. He's very very well behaved.
He's like I'm not going to steal while you're looking. He's gorgeous.
It's him. See him he goes.
Hang on.
Hi come here.
Okay well I don't know where he is. I think he's going to show up but I think I've been cat burgled.
You definitely have. It's a good look for you though. Yeah so if a pink shirt shows up
please let me know. I'll bring it back. Leo. Leo. Where are you Leo?
Leo. Here pussy pussy pussy pussy. Here pussy pussy pussy. Here pussy pussy.
All right well that's some good television right there. Yes indeed. Yes indeed.
All right what else? You tell me what else. Do you have any questions or comments or anecdotes?
No. No I mean good stuff. Good stuff. Comic Con everybody you know enjoy if you're out there. Be
safe. If you're going to going to a restaurant I guess you should watch for vermin. Yeah.
That's all. Have a good weekend. Yeah. All right good weekend. All right everybody
thanks for joining us. Hope you all have a great weekend and we'll see you next time. See you later.
