Whats the Point of Wavy Blades? (Flamberge, Kris, Etc)

Wavy, undulating, "flame" blades are popular in fantasy for their unique, vicious appearance, and although not particularly common in real-life history, they did exist in different parts of the world. They meaning and practical value has often been discussed, although it's hard to be sure of anything.
