It became popular in the court of Louis XIV, where Jean Baptiste Lully was the leading court composer. This particular gavotte has been arranged for orchestra, piano and violin, piano and cello, and trumpet and organ, and has become a popular study piece due to its simple yet expressive melody." Jean-Baptiste Lully, born Giovanni Battista Lulli (* 28 November 1632 in Florence; † 22 March 1687 in Paris), was an Italian-French composer, violinist, guitarist and dancer who lived at the French court from the age of 14 and rose to the highest musical offices under Louis XIV. In December 1661 he became a French citizen and was ennobled in 1681. As a composer of characteristically French Baroque music, he is considered one of the most influential composers in French music history, to whom foreign composers, particularly in northern Europe, such as Purcell, Handel and Bach, also referred in their works. For several generations, many of his pieces were part of the regular musical repertoire at European aristocratic courts, particularly in Germany. His collaboration with the comic playwright Molière is also famous.
