"Josef Joachim Raff grew up in Lachen on the upper part of Lake Zurich. His father, the schoolmaster (employed from 1817) and music teacher Franz Josef Raff, had fled to Switzerland in 1810 to escape forced conscription by Württemberg, where he married Katharina Schmid, the daughter of the ox farmer in Lachen in the canton of Schwyz. In 1838 he moved to Schmerikon, then to Schwyz. His modest income as a schoolmaster did not allow him to provide his son Joachim with a comprehensive education. However, the boy practised playing the violin, piano and organ from an early age.

When the papal nuncio needed an interpreter for an official matter, Joachim entered working life as his companion at the age of 18. He proved himself excellently and became a teacher in Rapperswil in the same year. However, his thoughts turned to music and just four years later he left the teaching profession. As a result of a youthful prank, he was expelled from the canton of Schwyz as an "undesirable foreigner". In Zurich, he eked out a living by giving lessons. He wanted to experience and see Franz Liszt at a concert in Basel. As he had no travelling money, he walked in the pouring rain. Unfortunately, all the seats were sold out, but Liszt found out about his admirer, let him into the concert hall and gave him a special place on the stage. Through Liszt's mediation, Raff was offered a job in a music shop in Cologne. This marked the end of his time in Switzerland." Source: radioswissclassic.ch
