The music lover who scribbled these lines on the original edition of Joachim Raff's violin sonatas in the 19th century would probably be delighted to see how 21st century musicians are gradually rediscovering the works of their idol. In fact, a kind of Raff renaissance has only recently begun, which is all the more deserved as the composer did not just fall into the shadow of the great Romantics posthumously. As Franz Liszt's private secretary in Weimar - a post he held from 1850 to 1856 - Raff himself settled into a position from which he found it difficult to escape throughout his life.
