Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat, BWV 243, is a musical setting of the biblical canticle Magnificat. It is scored for five vocal parts (two sopranos, alto, tenor and bass) and a baroque orchestra with trumpets and timpani. It is the first major liturgical composition by Bach to a Latin text.

Lyrics:

My soul exalts the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;
for he has seen the lowliness of his maid.
Behold, from now on I will be called blessed
all children's children;
for he has done great things for me,
who is mighty and whose name is Holy.
And his mercy endures forever to those who fear him.
He does violence with his arm and scatters those who are proud in their hearts.
He overthrew the mighty from their thrones and exalted the lowly.

He filled the hungry with goods
and sent the rich away empty.

He remembers mercy and restores his servant Israel,
as he spoke to our fathers,
Abraham and his seed for ever
Glory be to the Father, Glory to the Son,
and Glory to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, now and forever
and for ever and ever.
Amen
