The Well-Tempered Clavier (BWV 846–893) became a milestone in European music history because all keys were now fundamentally equal and the possibilities of enharmonic and modulation could be extended to all keys.

Unlike other compositions by Bach, the Well-Tempered Clavier did not fall into oblivion immediately after his death. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart probably became acquainted with the work through Gottfried van Swieten, who brought sheet music from Prussia to Vienna; Mozart arranged fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier for string trio (KV 404a) and for string quartet (KV 405).

Ludwig van Beethoven also knew and appreciated the Well-Tempered Clavier:

"Louis van Beethoven ... an 11-year-old boy with promising talent. He plays the piano very skilfully and powerfully, reads very well from sheet music, and to sum it all up: he plays mostly Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, which Mr Neefe has given him. Anyone who knows this collection of preludes and fugues in all keys (which could be called the non plus ultra) will know what that means."

The river in the picture is called the Chirel or Kirel. It is a mountain stream about twelve kilometres long in the Diemtigtal valley in the canton of Bern. It is a southern and right tributary of the Simme.

The name first appears in 1352 as 'an Kirle'. It probably comes from the Celtic word for 'dark stream'. Since it is often in the dark shade, I would guess.

To capture the sun rays and the little fogs above the river, you have to be lucky enough to be there early enough before the snow has melted. Simone Schlegel filmed the scenes of the fresh snow in the Diemtigtal Valley in Switzerland, and Wenjing Ma edited them.
