The recent legislative elections in the Maldives resulted in a resounding victory for President Mohamed Muizzu's political party, which has pro-China leanings. This outcome is expected to heighten security worries for both India and the United States. However, experts suggest that the Maldives may have little choice but to pursue a diplomatic approach as the only viable option for the Indian Ocean island.

The administration led by Muizzu is anticipated to reduce its anti-India rhetoric since a former high-ranking official stated that the country is "insignificant" to align with any particular side.

The People's National Congress won 70 out of 93 seats in the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, according to the initial results. This gives them complete control of the parliament, along with the three seats won by its allies.

The resounding triumph enhances Muizzu's capacity to formulate policy decisions. However, given his previous directive to evacuate Indian forces from the Maldives earlier this year, it is unlikely that he will undertake any additional extreme actions against New Delhi.

"The opposition's significant defeat means that there will be no obstacles for him to pursue any policy initiative," stated Manoj Joshi, an esteemed scholar at the Observer Research Foundation with expertise in international politics. "Nevertheless, he has indicated his desire to maintain a balanced and stable relationship with India." I anticipate that we will not witness any significant or remarkable occurrences.

Muizzu, who assumed leadership by advocating for the elimination of the island nation's enduring "India First" policy, inked a "military assistance" agreement with Beijing in March, following the directive to withdraw Indian troops.

Joshi stated that Muizzu's victory in parliament might potentially lead to a greater inclination towards pro-China policies. However, Joshi also mentioned that India is likely to adopt a cautious approach towards this development, considering the close geographical closeness between the Maldives and India, which would naturally result in the continuation of diplomatic relations.
