Joe Biden Takes Charge: Urges Hamas to Embrace the Path to Peace
President Joe Biden of the United States presented a three-phase plan proposed by Israel for a ceasefire in Gaza. The plan involves the release of Israeli hostages. President Biden expressed his belief that it is necessary for the war to come to an end and received a favorable response from Hamas.
The initial stage encompasses a period of six weeks during which Israeli forces would retreat from all inhabited regions of Gaza. As part of this phase, certain individuals held captive, such as the elderly and women, would be released in return for the liberation of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Additionally, Palestinian civilians would be allowed to return to their residences in Gaza, while a daily influx of 600 trucks would transport essential humanitarian assistance to the severely damaged enclave.
During this stage, Hamas and Israel would engage in negotiations to establish a lasting truce, which President Biden stated would be in effect as long as Hamas fulfilled its obligations. If the negotiations exceeded a duration of six weeks, the temporary ceasefire would be prolonged until its completion.
In the subsequent step, Biden said that there would be a reciprocal arrangement for the release of all surviving captives, encompassing male military personnel. Additionally, Israeli forces would retreat from Gaza, paving the way for the commencement of a lasting truce.
The third phase will entail implementing a comprehensive reconstruction strategy for Gaza and repatriating the remaining hostages to their respective families.
