The Panavia Tornado, also known as the Tornado, is a family of twin-engine variable swept-wing multi-role fighter aircraft jointly developed and manufactured by Italy, the United Kingdom and West Germany.There are three main variants of the Tornado: THE IDS (Interceptor/Strike) fighter-bomber, the ECR (electronic Warfare/Reconnaissance) to suppress enemy air defenses, and the Tornado ADV (Air defense) interceptor.
The Gale was developed and built by Panavia Aircraft GmbH, a three-way consortium of British Aerospace (formerly British Aircraft), West German MBB and Italian Aerospace alanea.
The Tornado made its first flight on August 14, 1974, and entered service from 1979 to 1980.Its multi-purpose design enables it to replace several different aircraft fleets in purchasing air forces.The Royal Saudi Arab Air Force (RSAF) became the tornado's sole export user, apart from three original partners.The trilateral Tornado Training and Assessment Facility, based at RAF Cottesmore, continues international collaboration after the production phase.
During the 1991 Gulf War, tornados were used by the ROYAL Air Force (RAF), the Italian Air Force and the Royal Saudi Arabian Air Force for a number of low-altitude penetration-strike missions.The Tornado has played a variety of roles in armed conflicts such as the Bosnian War in the former Yugoslavia, the Kosovo War and the Libyan civil war.Tornados have also flown minor missions in conflicts in Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria.
A total of 992 Tornados were built, including all models.The aircraft still in service are now scheduled to be replaced by the Euro2000 Typhoon.
