The most widely distributed name for the Black Hawk is the S-70 helicopter, though it also has the common designation UH-60.The origins of the Black Hawk can be traced back to bell UH-1 Huey helicopters in Vietnam.Although the Huey helicopters proved their worth on the battlefield, they still showed their flaws during the escalating War in Vietnam.In the 1960s, the US began thinking about its successor.After coming up with standards for the new aircraft, the Boeing Voltor and Sikorsky proposals were finalised in August 1972, requiring the two manufacturers to compete through extensive test flights.Boeing's Voltor was ultimately defeated by a glitch during a night test flight of one of its prototypes.
“黑鷹”直升機，分佈最廣的姓名是S-70直升機，不過它還有一個常見編號爲UH-60。說到“黑鷹”的出身，這不得不從越南戰場上的貝爾UH-1“休伊”系列直升機說起。雖然“休伊”系列直升機在戰場上證明了自身的價值，但是在不斷升溫的越戰中它還是暴露了不少缺陷。上世紀60年代，美國就開始考慮它的後繼機型了。在提出了新機型的標準之後，波音伏托爾和西科斯基的方案於1972年8月入圍，兩家制造商需要通過廣泛的試飛一較高下。最終波音伏托爾因爲一架原型機在夜間試飛的過程中出了小插曲而落敗。
